“Chicago Not in Chicago”

Unfortunately no Alinea this trip, been on my list for several years. Open to recommendations, haven’t been to the city in 10 years. Staying at the W City Center next to Sears so dinner recs within walking distance of that would be appreciated.
Probably best to work your way over to west loop, walk shouldn’t be too bad. Monteverde, Au Cheval, Girl & the Goat are staples but its hard to find a bad restaurant over in that general area
EDIT: my idea of walkable is <30min, so might be a bit much now that i’m thinking about it
Revival Food Hall is right nearby for weekday lunch, Italian Village is close for dinner as well, kind of a classic loop spot.
For me, if I’m sending someone from out of town to one restaurant in Chicago, the list starts with The Publican. Tough to go wrong with any number of places in that neighborhood. It’d be a bit of a hike in this weather from Loop, but definitely worth the cab (not Uber) ride.
Can shoot you a list, fer sure.
Walkable is all relative, 30 minute is usually a good rule. At less than 20 degrees in a city I’m not overly familiar with at night solo that radius is smaller than usual.
As probably the longest tenured true Chicagoan here…
looks like a McDonalds is on that same block.
I wonder if they’ll have any specials for the big game Sunday night.
I will say, if you have time in the morning, Hero coffee is just down LaSalle by the river. Their breakfast bagels (smooth criminal) and cold brew is absolutely delicious.
Second this. Worst part of WFH is i’m not near a Hero very frequently
Is it a chain? I see one on Ida B Wells.
That’s the one I used to frequent. They have a handful around the city.
the loop is sort of a culinary dead zone. lots of places to grab good food and a beer, not as many places that are sorta special or uniquely (anything).
i’ll co-sign revival, cool spot. but for restaurants I always just go to the current eater 38 list. you’ll notice you’re pretty close to manny’s, which is a famous staple. carnitas urupuan is also phenomenal. then it goes to fancy places too, and hits on the fulton market/west loop stuff.
you could also walk to one of bayless’s restaurants in river north. there’s worse things than bellying up at frontera grill. or you could listen to the pod and walk to gibsons and eat at the bar there, famous people watching. beware of cougars!
also – best burger in the city is at the loyalist. don’t @ me.
and roister gets my top recommendation to sort of get the grant achatz vibez with a chill atmosphere
the other great tourist recommendation, that could be walked to from the searzers tower – is cindy’s roof top. overpriced, but expense that shit. great view.
There used to be a bunch around the city, but seems like several have closed over the past year or two
Would recommend one of: Babette’s, gilt bar, ciccio mio. All the same restaurant group on the same block depending on where you can get a reservation. Rose Mary is west loop is also a newer place and great
just got a gift card here from a friend cause they loved it so much.
Great rec, probably one of the better trios of restaurants in the city. Tip: if you can’t get into Bavette’s, lots of their staples are available at Gilt Bar
And now I’m craving Bavette’s.
Usually much easier to get a reservation at as well, they also have the exact same burger as Au Cheval without the potential wait
