Roll Call “Chicago” (Part 1)

Said that theyre open but have 100% snow coverage rn and no carts. Was looking around a bunch of courses in the area too and none are open. Drove by bloomingdale a few times this week and it was still covered. Medinah had a little green though LOL

Just booked a 4 spot at The Meadows in Blue Island for Sunday morning. Guy on the phone said there’s people out golfing right now. Slim pickins, but I’ll take it!

Where is a good place to go get fitted for a driver/woods?

Not Club Champion downtown.

Trying to stay away from Club Champion. I could do my local golf shop, but thought I would throw something out here.

What’s wrong with club champion?

Nothing, just depends on who you get in my experience. I’ve gone there twice for putting fittings, left the first one. Disappointing. Went to the Deerfield location and enjoyed it.

There’s other issues, but I don’t think it applies to the person posting on The Refuge.

If you’re looking for a really good fitter in the far NW suburbs, Gary Shastal owner of Pro Circle Golf.

I just did a golftec fitting. Would agree it can really depend on who you get paired with.

Does he apply the cost of the fitting towards the new clubs?

Did you have a good experience?

Caveat that I’m not an expert and I’m just a 9 handicap that is trying to find the ever-elusive center of the clubface, but I’m into this stuff from a hobby standpoint, so here goes:

It depends what you want with your wood fitting. Club Champion will not be able to fit you in anything other than a D, 3w, and 3h.

And it’s my understanding that if you want to get into a company’s full offering of woods (5, different hybrids), you’ll need to go to a brand-specific fitter. The club champion or PGA super stores of the world don’t carry enough shaft/head combos to let you try out a full suite of options.

This is based on me trying to get fitted for a 5wood at club champion. They straight up don’t carry them (aside from maybe a one-off). They let me hit a bunch of stuff for free. I went to PGA super store for one of the “free” fitting bays, and you certainly get what you pay for there.

If you know what brand you like, i’d find a pop up and see if you can do something there.

EDIT: And I’ll add, this was disappointing for me because club champion fit me for my whole bag… but that entire time they didn’t offer me a 5 wood or anything else a bit more “obscure” because they don’t carry them. So it’s not really a “full fitting” imo. I’m not a long hitter, so I was particularly curious about the 4i-3w side of the bag… see if i could hit a driving iron, different hybrids, 5 woods, cavity back irons, all on that end of the bag… and they just don’t have it. You’ll have a 6i, 3h, and 3w.

If you buy the clubs from him, the fitting is free. Pricing is list price, so you’re not getting overcharged.

I will def look him up

I hear ya. I am only looking for a 3 wood and 3 hybrid. I hit them plenty far right now.

If you end up going to the Club Champion in Deerfield, I would highly recommend Nick Dentone. Super knowledgeable and just a pleasure to work with. He’s definitely a fitter that wants you to get the best result (and be comfortable with that result) vs. some of the other fitters at that location that just seem to try and get you into “good enough” and call it a day.

I am sure there are a wide variety of experiences with CC, but if you can endure the up-selling and get out of the exotic shafts (which I feel was not worth it for me), it’s not a bad option at all.

I did, knew going in what I wanted out of it which helps. Play at like a 12 handicap so not setting the world on fire. I knew I wanted to hit all the new drivers and let them tell me what fit. Told him what my budget was and worked around that. All in all good experience took a ton of swings in 90 minutes.

I had good experience with Steve Ford at PGA Superstore Vernon Hills. Just did a wedge fitting with him was great.

He may be a good fitter but he babbled pro-Trump drivel to my buddy a bunch during his fitting last year. I was planning to go to Club Champion in Schaumburg but uh…legal fees.

Yeah, that can be an issue. Usually if you blow him off, he moves on pretty quickly.

I had a club fitting session at Golftec that came with the lessons package I bought. I wasn’t expecting much beyond a more knowledgeable experience I would get at a PGA store, and I was already down to looking at 3-4 drivers. So for what it was, it was educational and helped confirm some things for me. I had some extra time at the end so he had me try out some hybrids as well, which only made me want the Sim 4h.
