Roll Call “Chicago” (Part 1)

9 hole Downers Grove is lovely, and if you’re willing to drive a bit south I loved Kankakee elks. Spring valley in Wisconsin is super rough around the edges but is a fun and cheap trek to make.

Dead of winter planning for next golf season here. Mchenry CC is asking me to renew for year 4. I live in Cary and Foxford Hills is in my back yard. Weighing the pluses and minuses
Mchenry

  • walking friendly
  • practice range
  • regular 4 some
  • pace of play
  • ownership
  • location
  • cost vs other options

Foxford
+location
+okay practice facilty (could also join local golf academy)

  • cost vs. other options
+kid friendly (i have two 10 year olds and would love to take them along more)
  • not walker friendly (very long walk
  • pace of play could be issue (i do like to play early on saturdays)

Anyone in the Mchenry Plex have any thoughts or any other suggestions ?

BVGC? Only $3,200 with haggling room.

Never thought much about bvgc. How walkable is that ?

Slightly better than Foxford when you learn the shortcuts.

Can you dock a boat outside of Foxford’s clubhouse? Nope.

I’ve been informed that I am going up against our very own @PTM in the Post of the Year thread. Can i just concede?

Time limit edit: I’d vote for PTM if I could. Goddamn voter suppression.

You can do what you want, but you’re currently winning which includes a vote from @PTM

Orchard Valley is a fun track as well.

Orchard Valley must put ball magnets in their water whenever I’m there. That course is my kryptonite

I’m a full class act, Venkers has the higher quality post.

I’m just happy to be here with all of you.

I played 54 different 18 hole golf courses in Illinois last year. Would agree the names already listed are the top of the heap for public golf in Chicagoland. A few others I enjoyed:
Wilmette Golf Club
Pine Meadow
Ruffled Feathers
Calumet
Old Oak

I would like to hear more about this. I’ve heard nothing but bad things about RF for a few years now.

Played this fall.

Conditioning was fine. The 11th is fun as hell (island green).
14-16 is the most bizarre routing I think I’ve seen. Fairways are oddly shaped, the landing areas and greens are VERY small, and every shot you’ll hit is blind to some extent. If it’s your first round out there…you will be punished.

Ruffled Feathers IMO is awful. Over priced and undermaintained. Now granted Mr. Dye didn’t do them any favors with a gazillion bunkers out there but if they want to charge top dollar they need to take care of it better. Even the tee boxes looks like they were lighting off mortars on them. There are better options minutes away for my money.

No Old Head?

Ravi is fun…not in my Top 10 though
Solid midfield team along with Chevy Chase and Sunset Valley. Those 3 are Renault/Racing Point/McLaren of my list.

Wow surprised to see Arlington Lakes here! Any reason why it makes the list?

They went out and searched carts on the course for my wedding band, which prevented a homicide, so they’re always #1 in my heart. Also it’s a fun course at a good price
