Roll Call “Chicago” (Part 1)

As promised, put together a little course review for Sydney Marovitz. Come on…you guys have nothing better to do on a Monday morning, right?

Sunset Valley is like a Toyota Camry. Good value, serves its purpose, you don’t mind being in it every day, perfect for the budget conscious, but it’s not exciting. Nothing that stands out as exceptionally good or bad.

What’s the best hole at SV? Worst hole? They’re probably not too far off from each other. Every hole is a 6 or 7.

In 2020 I visited these area courses for the first time (ranked favorite to least favorite)

  1. Olympia Fields North
  2. Ravisloe
  3. Cog Hill Ravines
  4. Hawk’s View Como Crossings
  5. Countryside Prairie
  6. Sunset Valley
  7. Stonewall Orchard
  8. Highland Woods
  9. Fox Lake CC
  10. Countryside Traditional

None of these courses were bad per se, but I don’t see myself going to Countryside Traditional ever again. This year when I didn’t play my home course Valley Ridge, I spent the most time at my two favorite courses Mt. Prospect and Shepherds Crook. I didn’t make it to Bowes this year sadly.

@TeddyPargame and I will be facing off at Harborside Sunday 9:10 if anyone wants to join. Plan at the moment is to play Port and walk.

I’ve made the drive up to Valley Ridge a few times after booking super last minute, and that place is WILD. Everyone’s got that $150 unlimited pass and just jumps around hole to hole in carts cutting people off. Also it has some of the hardest tee boxes and fairways I’ve ever played. Good bones there though, that long par 3 18th is sweet.

Oh man. Ya wild is a great word. I grew up on a house on the 17th fairway. I have so much history on every hole. 18 this year was the site of my first breaking of 80 which nearly was a four-putt because the groundskeeper doesn’t understand what’s an unfair pin placement. I DID four putt on the same pin position when I was 2 under on the back but that day I had played it as hole 16 and I did manage to get another birdie to break par on 9 for the first time. I’m not proud of throwing my putter and entire bag after the four putt, but these things happen. The back 9 is actually pretty good if you don’t miss left and can look past some overgrowth and bad maintenance of hole 14. I still probably wouldn’t recommend this course to anyone on here, especially with Spring valley just up the road.

I was joking with the guys I got paired with that the place is clearly a front for some type of organized crime with how badly maintained the place is overall.

Well actually it used to be a popular spot for the mob back in the day. But ya, it nearly went out of business and my dad was seriously considering purchasing it and regrets not doing so. If I had been into golf then like I am now, I would have made a massive push for him to buy it and made myself head groundskeeper. I have a ton of ideas for every hole.

Well that’s pretty cool. What was the asking price for that place?

Rumor is sold for 400k including the clubhouse and the course gets water for free from the chain of lakes.

New guy here. Taking this Friday off to hopefully play some golf if it isn’t too chilly. I’ll be around the Naperville area if anyone is interested in getting out.

Don’t have a specific course in mind, open to anything.

Anybody wanna go play Highlands of Elgin next Tuesday? I’ve got the day off work and the weather’s looking pretty decent.

Free water, good. Free water fertilized from the Chain, great.

I got out to Valley Ridge in July. I wouldn’t recommend the course with Leisure Village’s par 3 course down Grass Lake Road.

I know where Leisure village is but didn’t know they had a par 3 course. It’s actually good?

My first time as an adult hitting golf balls was on that course. I remember walking up and thinking, “Nah, this isn’t right. This isn’t golf.”

Stonewall is a tough a grueling course. Played it when I was hungover and it was cart path only. Probably won’t go back because I feel like there are better courses like ravisloe with more history and a better lay out

I think there are lots of really solid holes at SV: 1, 3, 8, 9, 13, 14 all come to mind. The course is a step above Camry to me…
