Usually signing on from home around 9AM, at least until I can work from the office again. Some days things are slow enough (calls pushed to late morning) where I can run out, play 9 before work.
One of the wildest rounds of golf I’ve witnessed went down at Baylands today.
Shoutout @giles for setting it up. Cheers to @thomaschambers & @Matt_monk who took the win, 2 up.
Highlights:
I look up after my lay up on the par 5 3rd to see Matt has stuffed his second. He makes eagle.
On 6, the long par 4, 1 hcp we all watch as Thom flags his approach, bounces once and hits the nerf for another eagle.
Have I mentioned this was two man best ball? Giles and I are quickly down a bunch.
Giles nabs back to back birdies at some point and then on the par 5 13th, he smokes a gapr dead into the wind. It lands on the front of the green and gently taps off the nerf for his first albatross! ![]()
I birdied the short par 3 15th to keep it close. But Thom birdied 18 (an inch from another eagle!) to close us out.
Amazing day. The refuge fuqs.
(The boys walking up 17)
Couldn’t have summed it up any better myself. Wild, very fun rounds boys - thanks!
Wow sounds like a great round! Hope to join you guys next time and get some of that birdie/eagle/albatross energy!
For sure. As long as my “3putt” energy doesn’t rub off on anyone should be fun haha
Wild indeed! Not seriously questioning anything, but how were you able to tell if the approach hit the foam on 13?
On some of the approaches, I’ve thought about how it would be to find my ball sitting right next to the foam/hole and not knowing for sure if it hit or not (hasn’t been a real life concern yet though).
Our two opponents were closer to the green and verified what we saw from the fairway as well. After it nudged the foam it stopped just inches away. no question it would have been / went in.
So, the foam is above the hole there? I played Metropolitan yesterday and the foam was at the bottom of the cup, which seemed … really, really dumb. Why not just raise the cup up a bit and have the ball still go into the hole, just not as far to ensure you can pick it up gently? I thought the noodles were supposed to stick up above the hole but that’s not what Metro was doing.
I believe as this whole “golf in COVID” era has progressed things have evolved. Most courses around here dropped the raised cups for pool noodles (aboveground) then later cut them so they were under the lip but still didn’t allow the ball to completely fall below the level of the green.
Played on Saturday at a course that didn’t have anything in the hole but the flagstick.
Yeah I’ve seen a mixed bag. These were the kind with nerf around the base of the flag stick. Didn’t fill the whole cup, but just about.
Dang, sorry to hear no fans at Harding Park for the PGA…
As an eyewitness I can verify that it was 100% legit – we were both green-side in 2 (no big deal) so had walked up far enough to bear witness. Rolled up at a gentle pace, bumped lightly into the middle of the foam, centre cup. Foam or no foam, that sucker was in.
The exact scenario you mention came up on the 4th, though – short par 3, base of the flag obscured from view, a ball sat near the pin that had been tracking a line very approximate to the hole. Kind of forgot about it in the excitement that followed, but there’s an outside chance @giles had an ace and an albatross on the same day.
Oh yeah! I forgot about that too… is one a good score? lol
You guys all balled out.
FYI, if you’re looking to get a refund for your PGA Championship tickets (since its moving forward without spectators), you have until July 15th to do it. I used a link provided in the email that arrived when they initially moved the dates to August, in order to start the process on my refund. Wanted to share that info since I don’t think they’ve sent out refund information since this latest news.
@thomaschambers, @Matt_monk, and I are playing a Friday twilight round at Baylands. Looking for one more.
4:30 p.m. this Friday, $36.
Oh man, wish I could join but I’m not going to make it for Friday. Count me in on the next one
I’ll be out with a buddy of mine at Redwood Canyon on Sunday. 12:10PM tee time. There’s two spots left on the website if anyone’s looking to play Sunday.
Playing 36 for an early Solstice golf at Peacock Gap on Friday with @marklemcd and playing Blue Rock Springs with the Oakland MGA on Saturday.
Any other MGA’ers on here?
In addition to playing Sunday at Redwood, I’ll be out at Rancho Del Pueblo for a quick 9 before work tomorrow, 9:01 tee time if anyone would like to join.
I’ve booked for a twosome, since the site apparently now won’t let me book as a single.
Anyone on here familiar with Oakhurst Country Club(Clayton)? They are running a membership deal right now that seems too good to be true. I’m going to check out the course next week, but wanted to see if people on here have ever played the course?
