played bayonet yesterday, the wind was up & it was playing really firm & fast (zach johnson thinks they lost the golf course) + the back of my driver dented in & cracked on the range (R.I.P.) but considering the $ that’s probably the best course by value in the area, course was in solid condition & the sand was really soft
I was lucky to be first off on a foggy morning. It was awesome.
Re: Foxtail, don’t bother with the South Course. Notlrth Course is better.
Re: Rooster Run… Run by same management as Windsor
Walkable? My dad’s in good shape, but don’t want to push it.
Ya. It’s only 9 holes. Fairly flat. Small piece of property.
but is it also a very tight tight piece of property?
Some video of the course
You gotta add the gif
Not sure what took so long, but been a big NLU fan and just jumping into the Refuge. What a resource I have been missing. I’m in Marin, but get out all over the bay.
Adding to the recent comments on Stonetree, I completely agree its tight and overly punishing. Conditions usually are excellent but weird holes like #9, #13, #14, etc
What part of Marin are you in? I just drove up to Santa Rosa today and played Bennett Valley. Like a lot of courses up there it can be a mess in the winter but due to the lack of rain it played great and the ball rolled well. I love the course - it’s like a better version of Peacock with a slight bit more elevation but very, very walkable
Now I’m super hyped. @greebs I’m in Greenbrae, I’ll have to check out Bennett too.
i am back, anyone down for some golf?
I had all work abruptly stop yesterday around 2:45 and I managed to drive to the course, and walk (with some running) 18 holes before dark teeing off at 3:42 in 68 degree weather for a “pay your age” fee of less than $30. Poppy Ridge is playing as good as I’ve seen it right now. One of the days the California sunshine tax is absolutely worth it
Sweet, my folks live there. We are in Corte Madera. Would love to coordinate a Northwood trip sometime, I haven’t played it in years and it’s fairly great.
The way it’s talked about on here it sounds like the kind of place to do a tournament like the one I saw refered to on here the last month.
I’ve been looking into golf around the Bay Area for the last few weeks as the possibility of me moving there from Chicago are really strong at the moment. I’ve been reading this thread a bunch, but I have a bunch of random questions.
-
Have most of you played or plan on playing pebble? If not can you sleep soundly knowing you’ll never do it?
-
What’s the perception on which is the best course and least good out of Cal club, Olympic, and SF (just curious I never expect to play at any).
-
Anyone live in Fremont/Union City and commute across the bay? Is it awful? What would be a good course to play 9 after work on this route?
-
Ever drive to Bandon? Seems like the best route for the money you save.
-
Some random courses look really crazy on google satellite view, like hardly any grass and all yellow. The turf looks so much different then I’m used to in the Midwest. Any comments?
-
Totally random: How often do you come across snakes on hiking trails? My wife has a snake phobia…big time.
-
Born and raised SF (Peninsula now) and have never played Pebble. I sleep just fine based on the price. Some day I’ll make it happen, but it seems so obtainable that I’m waiting for the right moment.
-
SF Club seems to have the most mystery and exclusiveness. Cal Club seems to be the one everyone wants to play right now. Olympic has the Tour history, but the easiest ability to get on.
-
Never have had to drive over a bridge or go through a tunnel for work, but the commute looks like hell.
-
Done Bandon with a flight for the past four years, this year we are driving. Bandon is the easy choice for an annual guys golf trip for the West Coast.
-
Don’t worry about the color of the grass. The fact that rain is the only reason you can’t play golf is huge. No snow, enough said.
-
I don’t hike too much, but I can’t remember the last time I saw a snake. I know they are on some of the trails in the East Bay, but anywhere that has them has signs posted. We aren’t as bad as the desert.
- Lived here for nearly 10 years and haven’t played. I even have a gift card somewhere that would have covered greens fees. I’m sure I’ll play it someday, but I don’t lose sleep over it.
- I haven’t played either. I think Olympic and Cal Club are definitely easier to get on than SFGC. Not sure about quality of the golf
- Get an electric car with the HOV sticker (newer one) and that will save you time. Where are you going for work. If it is just across (say the Facebook office) that might be doable even without HOV access. But anything beyond that (north or south) will be a pain. If you can take the San Mateo bridge, then Mariners point (lit 9 holer) could be an option
- Haven’t driven to Bandon.
- There’s a decent amount of good public golf and you can play year round.
- I don’t hike but at my course in the East Bay hills, have definitely seen snakes.
- For a round at Pebble, once you factor in lodging, I can do a multiday Bandon trip. I also feel I need to generally play a course more than once to appreciate it fully.
- Haven’t played Cal Club but have played SFGC once and Lake course twice. SFGC was magical.
- I grew up in the South Bay. There’s a reason I chose the North Bay.
- Driven to Bandon twice. So worth it. Unless you have a private aviation hook up its the best way.
- Yellow beats white.
- I’ve encountered 2 rattlers on my golf course in the North Bay but never on trails. I used to take my dogs hiking at Lake Sonoma, but the tick population is a real problem.
