Roll Call: Bay Area Golfers

Careful. That shit’s contagious.

Hi all,

Not a Bay Area local but Im up in Northern Mendocino (Willits) and a member at my neighborhood 9 hole coarse here in Brooktrails. Just started playing this past October but I got the bug and play as often as 3 times a week. I often travel as far south as San Raf and look forward to possibly meeting some of you.

Ayo! Willits now we are talking I’m up in Humboldt. Not many of us this far up my man haha

Welcome! Peacock Gap in San Rafael is where I do most of my damage. Let me know if you’re planning a drive south. Some of us have also talked about getting up to Northwood in Russian River (a 9-hole Alistair Mackenzie!) and I know @GremlinGolfer has made that trek a few times.

Northwood in Russian River (a 9-hole Alistair Mackenzie!)

I used to live down the street from there, its an amazing property and the clubhouse is beautiful. I cant speak for the golf because I never played it but I have heard from quite a few people its top notch. That trip is less than 2 hours from me and I would defiantly be down for that. Links at Bodega Bay is on my list for this summer and Ill be sure to let people know when I start planning that trip.

@greebs Im planning on coming down that way for a concert the 14th and if I can get down early Id love to get a round in.

So, big yes to Northwood (which I’ve played, but not for years) and Bodega (one of the most underrated courses around here). Peacock would be great that weekend, but I actually will be heading out of town for “Ski Week” with the family. (Assuming you mean the 14th of February…) But I’ll catch you next time, hopefully.

how is brooktrails ? google earth shows it being hidden in a rather large grove . northwood is great .
windsor, healdburg and foxtail and bennett valley are all good tracks in the northern sonoma county.

Brooktrails is a fun little place to play and the owners do a great job of keeping what little bit of sunny areas they have with nice grass (every tee box is on a mat). The problem is that, like you said, its blocked from the sunlight almost all year because of the redwoods. For me its amazing because its about 1 mile from my front door but I wouldn’t plan any trips around seeing it. Im often very taken back about how beautiful it really is and how unforgiving it can be. If you miss a green from the hallway tee shot your likely in the woods or playing off a very tight lie on some hard pan. That being said, its something special to play in a redwood grove. I feel like this being my starter corse has made me excel in my <200yd shots and have never played at an actual pitch and put I have a feeling it would be comparable.

The conditions at Healdsburg are far better but if your making a trip out to Hwy 1 or north on Hwy 101 I would recommend taking the side track and a little walk in the grove.

edit: its nothing like northwood, our “fairways” are mostly hard pan with no grass at all. The comity in charge of the redwood groves here will not allow the owners to cut the trees they need to cut in order to get the sunlight required to have such lush green fairways.

Ok, refugees … @jimithng23 and a friend of his are coming out to Pasatiempo on Super Bowl Sunday. We’ve got a time at 9:50am, and there is a spot available in the foursome. Claim it!

so planning the Cell Phone Carrier Pebble Beach Pro-Am trip (weather permitting) & what are y’alls thoughts on Bayonet/Blackhorse because that’s our planned round of golf for Monday after the tournament (either there, Poppy Hills or Corica Park)

Both are great value for the area. Great mix of holes, good elevation change, the property is gorgeous. It will probably be pretty soggy and the greens were a little rough in spots when I played a few weeks ago. I think I like Bayonet more but it’s basically a toss up. The other two are fantastic as well, haven’t played Corica in a few months but it’s awesome, and Poppy was a fantastic surprise. Poppy will probably be in the best shape, Corica is the coolest design, B/BH is the best land.

Good summary, @Mack

have the day off and in sonoma county anyone want to play golf today?

I haven’t played Corica, but want to very much when I get back to the Bay Area. Poppy is a really wonderful course in its new iteration, just really fun. But it’s significantly more expensive than Bayonet or Black Horse. If you can get a deal for Poppy, play there. Otherwise, the Fort Ord courses won’t treat you wrong. Great views out there.

Poppy is in decent shape right now but everywhere down here is soaking wet (plugging in fairways etc). Personally think Bayonet is a little over-hyped but just as good as poppy if you can get a good rate.

Played an a.m. round at Fountaingrove with @greebs. Course is drying up nicely!

He beat me to it. The most gracious host, @Shankadelic treated me to his course and one I’d never played in my (relative) backyard. For those who haven’t played it, Fountaingrove is gorgeous and (wow) really challenging. Somewhere he has a picture of me DEEP in the woods as I brought not only my clubs but a serious case of the pull/shank … so many gorgeous holes, it beat me up but never felt mean or tricked out. Thanks again to you for the great morning and hope to buy you a dirty public muni round somewhere as my meager return soon.
