Roll Call: Bay Area Golfers

you’d need to play the first round of the day in about 2.5 to do it. first off at monarch at 5:24 and be done by 8 and teeing off at metro by 8:20 or so. then 12:45 & 5 at corica. hopefully some accommodating folks in the groups in front of you throughout the day

Just found out I’ll be taking a job in Fairfield! Won’t be moving till the winter but not sure if that makes me a part of this thread or Sacramento? Obviously don’t know where I’ll be living yet but pretty psyched for the golf out there!

Nice yeah you’re smack in the middle between the two. Just means more options

Welcome.

I play in Fairfield from time to time - Rancho Solano and Paradise Valley are great public courses that are super affordable

Congrats on the move… I’m sure you’ll find homes in both threads for sure!

Don’t know how I missed this post, apologies for delay… Yes. August/September 2022. But avoiding major holidays, Or other such bigger events throughout our region and on the Refuge Events Calendar. I worry about planning one any earlier due to marine layer, but also because of the campground calendar.

All Sonoma County Camping Parks, Gualala Point being one of them, open booking a year out. So basically, we can book this coming week for 2022 starting Monday. Etc…

So as of now I’m leaning toward September, so anyone looking to go can hawk the site for booking… hopefully that explains where my head is at.

In regards to Meadow Club, does anyone know what it takes to get on the waiting list? I’m assuming you have to know one or multiple members? It seems like its a decade long wait? If that’s the case I figure it makes sense to try to get on the list now and work on affording it in 10 years.

Ignoring the fact that its a jewel of a course, I’m also interest because I’m in Fairfax. The closest course to me is still a 20+ min drive (Peacock). Combine that with it being overcrowded and I’ve had trouble getting in rounds since I bought a house out here. Really wish San Geronimo golf course wasn’t stolen out from under the community.

I am not sure on details but I know they have sort of a Jr. Membership that isn’t nearly as difficult to get in too as the proprietary membership (which indeed does have a loooooooong wait). And being a JR. Member just gets you on that wait list, doesnt gaurantee you have a full membership when you turn 40 or whatever the age cutoff is,

Interesting, thank you, I’ll look into that. I’m 36, so that might still qualify me as Jr. depending on the cut off.

Didn’t realize you were so close (I’m in Corte Madera).

My understanding is that the first thing that has to happen for a new member to get brought in is for another member to resign or die. Like, it’s a fixed memberships, no exceptions. So that’s a bummer. And for the first year, you can’t play on the weekends. Seems like a big bummer as well.

It’s also - I THINK - $100,000 to join and way more than $1000/month for dues. I’m not entirely sure on those numbers but that’s the ballpark we’re talking about. And the name of that ballpark is, “We’re Pretty Sure We Don’t Want You, But Convince Us Otherwise.”

All that said, I would love to play Meadow Club. I just found out that my alma mater HS, Redwood, uses it as the home course. I simply cannot believe I didn’t play golf until I turned 30.

Not an age thing I’m fairly certain; it has to do with investment in the Membership. There are apparently some “Junior” members who try and stay that way so they don’t have to fully commit as @greebs mentioned. I had such an amazing experience there with my Dad, that I am actually going to try and start Looping there part time just so I can get a Monday round in once in a while. Also, the pricing that has been mentioned is accurate. From what I have always understood, its harder to become a member there than Olympic. But that might be more due to club size. Still, hanging out in the MacKenzie Bar with all the names of his North American Courses adorning the ceiling is just super cool.

Howdy neighbor. I wish I was as far east as you for golfing purposes, then a place like Richmond (where I read about you play) would be a reasonable distance. How has the distance been coming from Corte Madera?

Yeah these are some of the restrictions on timing and the fee load I had read about online. If I prioritized it, I think I can swing something like that by the time I’m 50, maybe, but its unlikely, but I’d like to give myself a chance. I keep finding myself driving by and looking at the golf course from the parking lot, like a dork.

That would be an awesome part time gig! Let me know if you pursue that and thank for the information!

I’m not surprised its harder to get into than Olympic, I’ve heard Olympic has a huge membership list.

It’s about five minutes farther than Peacock is for me. When I was in San Rafael obviously that would be a bit more but it’s fine. Only mild issue is the pre-work nine sometimes runs into traffic getting on the bridge but no real complaints.

Yeah that makes sense. For me, being west of the “Hub” (where SFD meets Red Hill Ave), makes it much tougher. It can be a 25-30 min drive just to get to the bridge in the wrong conditions. When I lived in San Rafael, I played a lot of early rounds at Peacock. Haven’t been doing that much (at all) recently. Part of that is because I spend so much time working on the house.

Know anyone that wants to invest in a 9 hole golf course with the potential of getting on the Bib Gourmand/ Michelin Star list… At least that is my dream for San Geronimo. Resurect the back 9 and create the Sweetens Cove of the West with a high end food experience. Would be hot hot hot.

I wish man, but there’s no way the land trust would ever sell to someone who wants to bring golf back.

So that’s a No then… shit I guess I got to figure out what my life is all about then man; thanks for starting my week off right…

I have no idea how accurate this is but i was talking with a member at my club and he described a route to being a member at meadow and it’s basically this:

  1. become a social member with a 10k initiation and 1k per month fee. This only allows weekday golfing.

  2. stay a social member in good standing until your name comes up on the list.

Wait ~10 years

  1. pay 100k initiation.

In this case you pay 230k before you ever make a saturday tee time

Yeah this is my dream as well, but I don’t think its going to happen unfortunately.

The whole thing was so poorly handled by the county. The property is so under utilized today. I go out there very often to walk my dog, no one is out there. We have so much amazing open space in Marin, that property is not needed. It would make a much better mixed use asset if it were addressed by the right people (i.e., Sweeten Cove style).
