Roll Call: Bay Area Golfers

So this is gonna be kind of a weird post.

My mom is beginning treatment for multiple myeloma at Stanford Medical Center this week. Which means lots of Bone Marrow Transfusions. I am going to be her caretake during the process which means a lot of downtime during her procedures. Due to COVID we can’t be in the facility so I am going to have to be somewhere. The entire process takes about a month and we are driving in from Fresno to be there during this time. Like many of you, golf is where I retreat to get my mind off of things and I was hoping to do so somewhere close by where I could get back to her in a timely fashion.

Any suggestions as to where I could play/practice? That doesn’t take me too far away the medical center?

Sorry to hear it, hope everything goes well with your mother.

Closest will be the range on Stanford campus. It’s open to public, not much of a short game area though. The course is private, but definitely worth playing if you have access.

Next will be Baylands in Palo Alto. Range and good putting/chipping greens. Course is great to play as well. Will be your best option for playing. Is busy, but during the week should be ok.

Does anyone in the bay know anyone who does custom wedge grind work? looking to take some bounce off my 60 degree

Second what @kruges said - the stanford practice center is good, and depending on which Stanford hopsital, it might be walking distance from where your mom is getting treatment.

I really like Baylands practice center - good putting and chipping greens, and a great cafe.

If the timing works, would be happy to get out to play at baylands - and can get the links card discount.

Best wishes to your mom.

Thank you all. It means a lot. I am sure I will get a better sense of what her schedule is like after this week. I would love to get together with fellow NLUers.

For the folks that have played Callippe in Pleasanton, how walkable is it? Playing out there tomorrow and wondering if I should bring my push cart. I always prefer to walk vs ride but not if it’s anything like Poppy or Wente.

Don’t hesitate to reach out if you need / want to get in a game. Happy to assist in the much needed mental break of care giving.

Best thoughts to your mom.

I just played Callippe a few weeks ago and used my push cart. I would recommend push cart. For reference, people were telling me to ditch the push cart for a golf cart. There are some holes with very long walks between holes and there are 2-3 holes on the back 9 that are steep climbs. Hope that helps.

It was a really fun course.

Agree that walking at Callippe is totally doable. It is pretty hilly, but I wouldn’t call any of the walks between holes to be too far out of the ordinary for a modern course.

Love the course, but #18 is pretty dumb.

@kruges right there with ya – 18 is a ridiculous hole and I’m not a fan either

OK, now you have my attention. I’ve played it about 6yrs ago (and clearly don’t remember much, hence the post) but what’s the deal with 18?

its a par 5 where you have to gasp lay up off the tee, which is my biggest gripe. Then an uphill second shot to a partially blind island of fairway, then back over the hazard again to the green.

Just target golf which is not my favorite and is sort of contrary to the rest of the course.

Sounds wild. I must have blocked it from my memory!

The red is the first death gulch, the yellow is the second death gulch and the arrow is just such an awkward shot. The hole just feels like your threading a needle.

Refugees that hate target golf? clutches pearls

j/k - only played Callippe once before leaving the Bay Area, and don’t remember 18 that vividly. I do recall an uphill par 5 on the front that was dead into the morning sun, and a drivable par 4 on the back that I reached, then 3-putted for par :grimacing:

Goodness that should be fun. I’m getting Bridges vibes from that image.

Joe Kwok in south SF is a grind guru. He might not be cheap though.

Don’t put that stink on Callippe - agree that 18 is dumb but the course is fun and The Bridges sucks beyond reason
