Tee times have been tight lately but you can call em and usually get worked into a group or they’ll get you out there somehow
Do they have a range?
technically yes there is a range. i’ve never used it but it’s good enough to hit some irons off of mats for a warm up i’d guess. That said the first two holes are par 3’s
That’s good to know. I just can’t roll up and take cold swings on the course or I’m going to wish I had stayed home.
If you are willing to head down to Monterey count this as another +1 for Bayonet/Black Horse. Great tracks always in superb shape. Poppy has some reasonable twilight times, I would say for the money it’s the top track in the area. I think they’re aerating this week or next, though.
*typically in superb shape. It’s been sketchy over there the last 4-6 weeks. It’ll be dialed one day and then it’s like they had a flood and hailstorm overnight the next day. We haven’t had hardly any rain either this year so it seems off
Pajaro Valley is a hidden gem.
Damn that’s too bad to hear, I’m coming down into town next week and am supposed to play BH Friday so I’m hoping it’ll be ok haha
I worked out there in college right when it first opened. Johnny Miller did an opening day clinic. I’m standing right there next to him and this cocky cart kid says to Johnny, “what the hell happened here Johnny?” Johnny says “bad piece of land I should of never put my name on it”
That’s TREMENDOUS knowledge. If I hadn’t played other Johnny Miller courses that made me say, “Man, FUCK Johnny Miller” - like StoneTree up here - I’d forgive him completely, but hilarious that he realized how bad it was right when it opened.
I’m a StoneTree member and I think the ONLY johnny miller course I’ve played that didn’t make me feel like FUCK Johnny Miller is Maderas down in San Diego area. He definitely seems to like to penalize stray swings!
Don’t forget about Pacific Grove. Definitely worth the 40 minute drive from Watsonville.
It’s like he built courses to say “if you can’t stripe every iron to 4 ft, you don’t deserve golf.”
Whitney Oaks in Rocklin, same shit. Fucking Johnny…
Don’t forget Eagle Ridge
wait, do we not like eagle ridge? it hasn’t been conditioned amazingly well when i’ve been there but I’ve thought the course was super fun and nowhere near as penal as the bridges
I won’t speak for the collective we, but I’m not a big fan.
Eagle Ridge is certainly not as bad as the Bridges, but I don’t think it would ever be confused with a playable design. Some of those holes, especially on the back 9, are a little silly.
I don’t mind most holes at eagle ridge but 8 and 9 back to back are pretty damn rough. 12 is just pretty much a hard ass golf hole, though lots of people I play with think it’s unfair. I think it’s an ok course overall but the routing is just a bit suspect on a number of holes.
Metro is pretty playable. Tough to make an “American links style” unplayable though. Bridges is a scourge on the golf landscape, and I can’t believe it’s still open. Not calling for it to be closed, but I’m just surprised that there’s enough masochistic golfers who want to endure 5 hours of torture and losing balls.
I always forget that he did Metro - metro is great!
