Roll Call: Atlanta - Campout 3/15 - Stankonia 6/7

Standard Club was struggling when I had a prospective round in 2019, and new members are on the hook for any and all assessments regardless of timing

Mont’s wait list is 1-4 months I believe

ATL guis - just moved back this weekend from NC and got out to Charlie Yates today… WOOF.

Course itself is actually decently interesting, greens were slow and a little rough but not the worst ever for $15. Still… incredibly poor experience for noon on a Monday, holiday or not.

Highlights:

  • Got to the first tee at 11:48 for an 11:54 tee time
  • Saw a twosome waiting on the 2nd tee, a twosome on the 1st hole, a threesome waiting on the 1st tee, then three more guys waiting behind the 1st tee
  • Asked the guys waiting on the tee if they were the 11:54 - no, they were the 11:41 still waiting to tee off at 11:48
  • Girl in the twosome on 1 took nine shots to get to the green on a 140 yard par 3… then putted out for a 14.

It was like that all day. Finished the 9 in just over 2:30. Needless to say, no ranger in sight. Tuff scene.

Welcome to Atlanta where the Players don’t play public on the weekend or Holiday. Public play is terrible on the weekend if you are not the first out or start very late in the afternoon.

Charlie Yates has gone down hill. I live a mile away which is a shame. They scalped and ruined their greens this year and they never ever have a starter. Everyone just shows up and plays in ones, twos or threes not pairing up with their tee times. Range is good but crowded due to everyone working from home. Their practice area is decent with hardly anyone there.

Go to Sugar Creek or Mystery Valley, just not on the weekends.

@Weezer2 have you been out to sugar creek lately? They are closed every Monday in January and February for tree removal. It’s going to make that course so much better.

In case any one was wondering, Lake Arrowhead still sucks butt. Played Sunday and I’m still not coming down from my high from being forced to hit a 7i off a tee of a par 5.

@Bird I was out there Thursday. I was the first one out after the frost delayed and walked in 2.5 hours.

No tree cutting yet but they were out in force doing maintenance. I really don’t mind the trees there, it’s the drainage that is the issue. Not sure how they fix the drainage issues given they are in a flood plain. I’m excited to see the changes as they should be able to grow more grass. Glad they tack $2 on each round to go into a capital improvement fund for the course.

Yeah I don’t never if the money will ever be there to fix the drainage but I won’t mind the course opening up a bit. I played the back 9 on Sunday and they had already started clearing out all the understory scrub brush. I’d say that alone probably saved me 2 balls that would have previously been lost.

Anybody who tries to commute on weekdays on Atlanta highways should understand what to expect on Atlanta public golf courses on weekends.

Incredibly frustrating place to play a serious match against a local member, I have to say. They have a lot of advantage in course knowledge.

100%. That 11th, previously 2nd, green is laughable. Without playing it before you have no idea there are 3 tiers on a green that’s 90-100’ long.

Getting real close to shoring up a slot at Bridgemill too… Might see ya out there!

Hey Everyone,

Looking to get some insight on the public game in and around ATL. Not new to the area but getting back into golf after a hiatus. Living in Sandy Springs and have struggled to find decent courses that aren’t private.

Welcome to the resistance general. It’s this threads journey to find good public golf around Atlanta.

There are some ones that are rough around the edges, but we’re still in search of a true gem.

When I lived down in Dunwoody (pre-2003) I used to play RiverPines a lot. Is that still the best public option in the area?

Saint Marlo has 17 good holes and is usually in good condition

Sorry to inform you all but there is no true gem in the Atlanta metro. Just a lot of compromise.

Although, @GeneralQuinn, I’m in the area as well and the range at Steel Canyon is a great place to spend weekday evenings, especially right now.

I’ll second Saint Marlo. Pretty good pick for that area. River Pines has the slow play dilemma as well.

Bradshaw Farms is a good shout as well, just no easy way to get there from the city. 30-45 minutes from everywhere.

Riverpines and steel canyon have been my go to just because proximity to where I am. I’ll have to check out St. Marlo. I’ve been taking some lessons at Steel Canyon with John Marshall. He said they were up 55% revenue from 2019.
