Roll Call: Atlanta - Campout 3/15 - Stankonia 6/7

Edwin Watts in Buckhead. Just had a couple adjustments made to my clubs this weekend.

They are following reasonable social distance guidelines (required masks, etc.).

Ask for Ken. He previously worked in the Mizuno Headquarters custom shop up in Norcross. Good gui.

That’s good info. Good to know there’s someone to trust there. I won’t be handing my wedges to one of the 20 year olds though.

Bob is the real deal.

For your iron fitting, could you give some details?

Were you hitting multiple models going in blind, or did you have something in mind that was dialed in? Did you have any custom specs that they executed, or did you buy elsewhere?

Thanks

Played Mystery Valley for my very first time this morning. It is a Gem! Walked in under three hours. Greens were rolling smooth. Fairways were dormant and drying out from the recent rain/morning dew. They are still working on the greenside bunkers on # 17, #18 and a few of the fairway bunkers. New sand in pretty much all the greenside bunkers.

Agree on Bob Bertrand. I did one of the $100 fitting van experiences for a driver with him a couple of years ago. Well worth it in my opinion. I got to hit multiple shaft and heads until I found the right combination. Was there for over an hour and not rushed out of there after 15 minutes like you do with their free fittings. He gave me suggestions, feedback and some swing tips.

Also one of the nice things is that the fitting van section had new ProV1’s to hit instead of the beat to death balls in their regular fitting bays.

After the fitting was done I got the shaft shortened, new grip installed and the club swing weighted. All at no additional charge except for the price of the grip. Bob walked my club over to the tech and explained everything they needed to do to the club and watched them do it right. I have not been a fan of PGATSS’s club techs so this was nice to see that they got it right.

Scheduled an iron fitting on their website. Trackman fitting, hit every current iron in my bag, hit different heads, different shafts based upon ball flight, spin, distance etc.
Went from playing Ping I e1s to Mizuno MP20 MMC with KBS $ Taper 120s soft stepped once. 1 degree flat. No pressure to buy from him, I ended up getting the set off ebay.

I know what they do at club champion and this is that experience at a fraction of the price. I think I paid $50 or $75 and I was in there for 2-3 hours.

Thanks.

I am very skeptical of the ability to get a proper fitting, primarily because there are tons of variables and most of us are not that consistent (I know we have more tendencies than may appear on the course!) compared to a high-level player. I value fitting but have personally had a mixed bag of experiences.

I am interested in new irons, so this may be something I explore.

I agree. I will say that my ball striking and consistency instantly improved. I was playing way too light of a shaft and my lies were off. My swing had changed ALOT since I first got my Pings (4 years). From here I dont see it changing much to where I need to be fitted for new shafts, heads, lies, etc. for a while. So you may be in that boat, I don’t know.

What are some good corporate memberships in town? Big boss man is exploring allocating what we usually spend a portion of our client services fund towards a golf membership. Were based in Marietta and work primarily in Atlanta.

Almost did a corporate membership with Rivermont but some of the people under my “LLC” backed out. May still do it solo in April. Me and some buddies at Laurel are getting the dues bump in 21’ for turning 40 so we are shopping the area.

Hey Everyone! Looking for some help here. I’m a midwesterner looking to find somewhere in ATL to spend a month practicing/playing. Anyone have suggestions for courses with a good practice area?

restraints? Like are you living somewhere in particular that you’d need to be close to? or are you basing where you stay off where the golf is? are you comimg to explicity play golf for 1 month, all day every day, or you’re here for a month for work / family and want to know where you can also practice play?

So I’ll go wherever the best golf is! I’ll be working from home so I plan to work and practice as much as possible! Weekends I’ll drive and play. Main concern is close to somewhere with a range and a short game area. Thanks for the help w the details.

Define your vision of “short game area” please.

Do you family or friends in ATL? You might want to go further south or to the coast if it doesn’t have to be Atlanta.

alright. a few thoughts. seems like it needs to be a public facility. not sure you’re gonna get some sort of short term deal with a private track that has better facilities.

  • Bobby Jones GC. Pros: actually in Atlanta. Very nice range. Have a short game course ($10/loop). Have a small chipping area. Cons: This chipping green doesn’t have holes cut so you can putt to a stick but you’re not hittting cups. Range, depending on time of day, is gonna run you about $15/bucket. If this is the winter, it will be mats only until about April or May.
  • Northcrest and Deer Valley are two driving ranges in the area. Both lit so they’re open at night. But in terms of a short game area, I don’t think either has one. Also mats only.
  • Legacy / Fox Creek are together. Both short, executive courses with ranges. Will probably get to hit off grass there, a little cheaper for balls. Conditioning is not going to be great. A little north of Atlanta in Marietta.
  • Heritage Golf Links. You could probably sign up for their montly membership and get range balls for cheaper. OK short game area.
  • also a driving range up in Woodstock called the Cherokee Gof Center. Putting green, but no “short game area.” But it does have a 9 hole par 3 that’s a quick loop
  • Charlie Yates. In Atlanta, next to East Lake Golf Club. Has a driving range and a decent short game area. Also a quirky 9 hole course. Home to Atlanta’s First Tee. Often busy because of that.

30 yards plus for pitching and bunker shots. I don’t have any fam. Just trying to find a place to go. I will take suggestions!

yeah that’s gonna be your hardest thing to find. only place i can think of that has that and is public is Bobby Jones, but also they don’t have a putting green. Some semi-private places would but the only time I’ve ever used them is when I play there so I’m not super familiar with what going to any of those courses simply to practice would be like / if it’s even allowed.

heritage kinda has that, but i wouldn’t exactly say it’s 30 yards plus. there’s basically one place you can stand and hit a 35 yard shot into the green. but if there are other people around the green chipping closer, you kinda feel like an asshole doing it.
