Roll Call: Alberta

I second Canmore G&CC, great course and you can’t beat the price. Fun little track.

I am hitting up Cranbrook with my golf group at the end of August. I have never been, looking forward to it. I hear great things about Greywolf, so really looking forward to the tee time we have there.

I would certainly be down, just need to understand the dates to see how it aligns with my shift and any competing tournaments I play in (I usually only play in two though, so not a huge issue usually).

What courses are you playing around Cranbrook? I did that trip three years ago. I didn’t play Graywolf but played (in order I liked them):

St. Eugene’s
Trickle Creek
Bootleg Gap
Fairmont Riverside
Shadow Mountain
Eagle Ranch
Wildstone

I would say both Wildstone and Eagle Ranch suffered more for the overall experience than the golf courses themselves so I would be happy to give them another chance.

The guys I am with had a track that they did last year, I think it is the same one (I worked, so I couldn’t make it).

  • Shadow Mountain
  • St. Eugene
  • Wildstone
  • Fairmont
  • Eagle Ranch
  • Radium Springs (both courses)
  • Greywolf

They loved Greywolf…I’m just looking forward to checking it out. I spend most of my time travelling to warmer destinations and golfing in the winter…I try to stay local and enjoy my four months of golf season I get up North lol.

The boys have shifted. We said screw it and are heading to jasper instead.

I screwed up the kananskis booking date and the rest is history.

There’ll be more alberta golf though if you’re around for it.

Cranbrook was sweet. Shadow mountain wildstone, trickle creek, and greywolf are lots of fun. I’d happily play greywolf annually.

Ohhh yeah Jasper’s a good call for that week, yeah i think i might be playin Cabot that Sept 19-21 time frame.

hah i coudn’t agree with Dunc more… those are my favorite tracks in Calgary area (Inglewood and Delacour). Redwood Meadows and Wintergreen in Bragg Creek are good too… but a touch more expensive.

We need a Redwood date ASAP.

Cranbrook born and raised here, finally my wheel house for a refuge question. IMO, one of the top/hidden gems (if you can call it that) for areas to golf anywhere I’ve been. All the courses in the Kootenays are fairly weather agnostic year to year, forest fire smoke is the largest variable for sure. All the courses stay relatively competitive with their green fees as the demand/supply is balanced. That being said, as someone who still gets home 3-4 times a summer, between St. Euge, Wildstone, Bootleg Gap, Shadow Mountain, Trickle, even the Cranbrook GC, if you asked me on any given day I wouldn’t feel strongly about playing any of them over another, which is high praise and not a bad thing. For the purposes of a hot take I’d say:

True Course Ranking:

  1. St. Eugene
  2. Wildstone
  3. Bootleg Gap
  4. Trickle Creek
  5. Shadow Mountain
  6. Cranbrook GC
  7. Purcell

Views:

  1. Trickle
  2. Shadow
  3. St. Eugene
  4. Bootleg
  5. Wildstone
  6. Purcell
  7. Cranbrook

Value:

  1. Cranbrook
  2. Wildstone
  3. Bootleg
  4. St. Eugene
  5. Purcell
  6. Shadow
  7. Trickle

Again, can’t really go wrong in the area, roll the dice and play where ever and you’ll probably walk away having had a great day, not broken the bank (unless you play Trickle), and wondering how fortunate it is that such a small(er) community can support 7 awesome courses.

Bonus: Farther down the valley, the Fairmont/Invermere/Radium Tracks are very similar. Greywolf gets all the pub but it is an awesome track worth the price tag. Eagle Ranch/Copper Point are fun and beautiful, but can be pricier. Riverside and Mountain Side are older, with Mountainside probably getting my nod as you get better views, although some blind tee shots and weird sidehill lies. Riverside can be forgettable but is almost always the first course in the area open in March/April. Radium and Radium Springs are also great.

Hey ya’ll,

I’m making the trip to Banff in a couple weeks for a wedding, and tacked on a few extra days in Calgary to make a vacation of it (staying in the Beltline area). Right now, my loose itinerary looks something like this:

Saturday (9/20): Fly in, dinner somewhere in Calgary
Sunday: TBD
Monday: TBD
Tuesday: Drive to Banff, golf @ Kananaskis on the way
Wednesday: TBD, possibly drive to Jasper Dark Sky Preserve depending on Aurora forecast
Thursday: Golf @ Banff Fairmont,
Friday: Lake Louise & Moraine Lake with a group, then the rest of the weekend will be wedding stuff.

So I’m looking for any must-dos in Calgary Sunday & Monday, and potentially Wednesday around Banff. I’ll be on a tight schedule for the lake trips on Friday, is it worth heading up there on Wednesday as well if I’m looking for something to do? Appreciate any help!

Sorry for the lack of response - have cut my Refuging WAY down recently… will fire some ideas over later today.

Hey folks

Recently joined the refuge. No idea what the roll calls really are, but I am based in Edmonton. Primarily playing Mill woods, Jagare and some of the CCT courses.

Welcome, we’re a small group up in yeg but there are a couple of us that play together when we can align the stars. Always good to have another to call on for a round.

I’m close to the millwoods course but don’t play it a ton, for no good reason either. I cct card it up for some range and practice stuff, as well as their indoor, but only play redtail for their courses.

The quarry, coal creek, and northern bear are in the rotation out this way for me. The round count dropped off hard this year but I’m always hopeful for more golf.

There are some good folks down in calgary that I’ve played with through this nest stuff too. We haven’t managed a proper meetup but there’s always 2026!

Thanks! I’ve been told a few times recently that I need to check out Coal Creek.

I signed up for the Millwoods Men’s League for the first time this year and that’s been great. The course has been in great condition since they had a change in who runs the show there.

I’m also playing Northern Bear or the Quarry this weekend with my dad when he is in town.

Would be happy to get out if anyone in Edmonton ever wants to go for a round, and would also be down for a meetup next year!

Yeah for sure get your butt to coal. It’s one of the best public offerings up this way. Tons of fun, in great and fast conditions usually, with an ever present wind effect too.

Mill woods when I first played was plagued with water issuss in the early holes but seems to have improved. I should play it more. Each of the last few times I have, I say the same thing, it’s 10min from my house.

Hey everyone,

First time, long time, new refuge member from Edmonton.
Been an NLU fan since ~2018, and would love some new/more golf friends and this seems like a perfect place to start!

Welcome, friend! We have a lovely little Edmonton contingent, led by @Banjopete and @cav007.

I am down in Calgary, played zero golf in Edm this year with those guys, although Brent and I did manage 36 at Wolf Creek this summer. Lovely stuff.

Hey dude welcome, always great to hear about more folks in the city.

The few of us that are on here from YEG do play together. Like a lot of folks in the province, we’re all imports so finding some golf buddies has been great. I know @wenincode chimed in about being another face here and I haven’t had a chance to meet him yet either.

As you can see in the thread we’ve managed some YEG CGY golf, and even some travel golf within the group and our extended western Canadian friends. There are guys in Calgary, but most of them are hard to peg down for golf, except @duncmitchell. We’re always hopeful that this year is the year we gather as a larger group for a battle of the cities! in a friendly way (or not).

For both of you guys we do most of our coordination in whatsapp.

If you guys sim golf, we should have a hit. @cav007 and I are both east siders. I’m a few blocks from one of the newest sim places “Tap Golf” off 50th street. We also used to haunt CCT on the regular and I have the remains of a 2025 indoor card with them still. They don’t have the best tech but their facilities are great, and it looks like they switched over completely to GS Pro for sim software.
