I’ve had that conversation a few times!
When is the book club date or is that still TBD?
Gotta go take Martyr! off my parents bookshelf

Martyr! secured for reading. Just realized this is a late Fall selection for my “in-person” group. They pick well so excited for this two-group comparison.
Had an absolutely fascinating discussion about “Intermezzo” with my “girl group” where I play the token male. I’d love to break this one down with at least a few other male readers and get @Sarah (and hopefully a few other gals) views on what I felt were some dynamic characters. Perhaps a Fall effort?
For now, any thoughts on April 23 or 30 to get Martyr! updated and scheduled?
I could make either of those work but would lean towards the second date just because I’m not going to be able to start it that soon. I just started reading Night Watch which I assume you’ve read, @CMick26 as it won the Pulitzer. On loan from the library so gotta knock that out. I borrowed Martyr! from my folks so I have a bit more time (and they distressingly both told me to just keep it since neither of them loved it, but who cares? Let’s roll!)
We can sure let it breathe a bit into May if more time is better. Mostly wanting to be a little bit better help on the stewarding and I’m not doing so well with that, I fear. First week of April and first week of May are my only Wednesday issues this spring— April seems to be touch less full of grad craziness and full bore Midwest golf efforts. All suggestions still on the table.
Let’s toss @OffTheDole a thread update TBD with the new title for starters “Martyr! A Novel by Kaveh Akbar.
Felt “Night Watch” got wrapped up in some “more than even the usual Pulitzer BS” last year. It deserved way more praise and recognition than it got for being a well crafted and written story (in my mind). Always know getting after my nerdy Pulitzer tick on time MIGHT get me out in front of you. Will be fun to compare notes!
Like I said, I would assume I can do either. Let’s set up a poll:
What date would you like to discuss Martyr! … ?
I voted for the 30th, but I’m also good with the 23rd!
I also regret to inform the group that after nearly two years of mooching off the IT department at my law school, I finally lost access to Zoom (and my school email), so I think we need to source Zoom links elsewhere.
Just finished Martyr! and I think regardless if you liked or hated the book it should spark some good discussion, particularly the ending. Impressive writing, if a bit (or a lot) convoluted much of the time. Should be good for any of the days suggested, btw.
Agree with all of this, as I finished it last night. The ending got me doing some Internetting to confirm or adjust how I interpreted it. Good stuff.
Did we decide on a day?
This doesn’t have too many spoilers and I thought it was a great read about the book.
Checking in on when we’d like to discuss!
30th is now better for me but depending on the time I could make any of them work. I’m about halfway through and I’m really enjoying it. Absolutely love the way he writes.
Me and @mcdonart22 both voted 23rd W 30th workable too.
Feel it’s time to commit and do an official booking for the 30th?
Think we are still in need of zoom help when the time arrives too.
Let’s book the 30th. I don’t have a Zoom account but I do have Teams if necessary.
Are we on for Wednesday? Just finished the book and I am in the weird state of having a lot of thoughts but no idea what I would say about it.
I’m up for it if others are. Not sure how many folks are ready to chat about it. I finished it awhile ago…
I’ve been finished a while and excited to discuss.
Not sure what our Zoom status is like or where others are at? 4/30 is probably the last Wednesday that works for me but if others need more time I can defer and give written thoughts post discussion date.
I should be done by Wednesday, I just hit what feels like the “acceleration” of events so I expect to fly through the rest.
Let’s do it! I think we can just do a free zoom, it just only lasts for 40 minutes.
Matthew Greber is inviting you to a scheduled Zoom meeting at 6:00 PM PST on Wednesday, April 29.

Historically it’s been the 9 pm ET / 6 pm PT spot to allow all coasts a reasonable time. 8 pm for the Minn and SoDak crew. Looking forward to this.
