Refuge Book Club: Martyr! A Novel by Kaveh Akbar - TBD

Kindof a dumb question, but is Colm Tobin a golfer? It seemed like such an odd and specific choice to have a female character have her life based so strongly around golf and her belonging at the golf club. Might have actually captured golf better than John Updike’s Golf Dreams…

Book club adjacent and I meant to post last weekend:

If you’re looking for a Juneteenth read, check out Annette Gordon-Reed’s On Juneteenth. Part history part memoir, knock it out on a rainy Saturday afternoon!

Thats a great question - let me share something on that in a few min

Shit, I completely misread the new date as the 28th and do not think I will be able to read the last 60 pages with solstice golf tonight. Let’s call my attendance tentative.

I think it has been suggested before but want to make sure Killer of the Flower Moon stays in the discussion for the next (or maybe future) selection. Truthfully, I just want to tell people that the book was better than the movie.

Re this question

Colm didnt play real family this book was based probably would have been a member of the club.

There are two towns in the south of Wexford - Wexford Town and and Enniscorthy. Enniscorthy is a farming, market town and is quite a bit wealthier than Wexford and therefore had a golf club and being a member of the golf club did “mean” something.

In Enniscorthy and right up to 15-20 years ago membership of the golf club (and tennis club) was a very clear signal of your social status and your place within Enniscorthy’s, not so much elite in the way we think about it now, but professional class along with the protestant farming class and it would have signified you were established in the community.

In contrast, if you were a member of the GAA (Irish domestic sports) club it signalled you were more working class. Indeed, Wexford Golf club was set up much more as a working class club and there was quite a bit of rivalry between the two places.

My guess is that the plot device of her being a member of the golf club is a signal that she really is an established person now within the community - and likely to remain established while also offering a contrast with the “status” of her sister in NY.

Late to adding because I’ve been partying with the duck club

Thanks to those who joined the convo! Always love connecting and chatting books. @methridge has suggested Killer of the Flower Moon. Unless we get significant objections, I’m going to suggest we go with it!

Got my dates mixed up and asked @CorneliousPoon last night if book club was this Wednesday. Doh! I’ll grab a copy of Killer of the Flower Moon and get to it for this next one. Hope everyone has a good 4th~

Fun to put the books down and actually play golf with one of my favorite prolific readers. Thanks again for setting up a little Bay Area night time golf this week, @greebs!

Was super fun! Thanks for joining and making the suggestion that led to this. Here’s a certain young hitter absolutely flushing it off the tee:

Was Killers of the Flower Moon confirmed as the next one? Any idea on Zoom time for that, going on vacation next week so can definitely knock out a whole book or two and want to bring this one.

I think this is the perfect choice and will be a good re-read pre movie.

Probably time for a @Double_Bogey_Dave or @OffTheDole header update to Killer of the Flower Moon by David Grann with TBD date?

Will it take folks more time to read the book or to watch what reportedly is a four hour movie???

Slow reader checking in.
Movie>Book for time
Book >Movie for personal enjoyment.

I’ll say it’s a fast read - the story is so wild that you’ll not want to put the book down. I flew through it (granted, I’m Choctaw, live in Tulsa, and done quite a bit of work with the Osage, so the story was more interesting to me than maybe others)

Edit to add: I think the movie will be much like Unbreakable - the book is massive, so there’s just no way to full capture it in a single movie. I’d definitely recommend reading the book before watching the movie. I have a hard time reading books a second time since I already know the story so if I see a movie before reading the book I’ll end up skipping chunks of the book that I remember from the movie and miss a lot of details.

I think we’re on hold while @Sarah is out there destroying the dreams of the PNW. I know @CorneliousPoon and I are in the midst of Barbarian Days and could use a couple more weeks.

4 hours sounds like a lot until I think about how many times I’ve been sucked into a multi episode true crime show

No no! Let’s get moving!

How does mid September sound? Maybe 13th or 20th?

I’m gonna pick it up this week and should be able to bang it out at the beach over the next two weeks so I’m good anytime after mid August!
