Ha! I love this idea. I sometimes keep a spreadsheet where I log how many pages of a book I’ve read in a given day and compare it to where I need to be in the book at a given time to stay on schedule. I’m all for whatever people need to do to keep reading.
FTFY
For sure it should be a goal not a barrier. I try every year to ensure I tackle one long/difficult book as a challenge. Not sure I’ve done that this year if I’m being honest.
Hey all, been super busy hence not very active here, though I had picked up Matterhorn previously and have been loving it.
If anyone is interested the NY Times 100 Notable books of 2020 list was just released.
The Booker Prize winner was also released, pretty impressive for a debut novel. Will have to put it on my list.
I came in here to say how glad I am to be re-reading Kavalier and Clay and that my concern - that there are so many other great books I haven’t yet read - and now I see this list and my goodness, so many more to add to the list!
If people aren’t going to continue with the Nest/refuge after it moves to nest only but want to continue with bookclub, I’m happy to send details over WhatsApp or email.
Currently very deep into a queue of books (golf adjacent and not) in my quest to get back into reading this year, but would love to join the book club and discussion for Matterhorn! Read The Things they Carried in High School, and heard good things of Maralantes, excited to #getinvolved
Consider yourself “joined!” The more the merrier
Given the news about the Nest and the Refuge, can we be sure to set dates for these two books shortly so in the event not everyone here is a Nest member that they can still participate?
I am currently around 400 pages into Kavalier & Clay, will be ready for the mid-December date that we were speaking about on the call
I’m only 100 pages in but optimistic I can finish by mid December. It’s pretty readable
I just started it tonight. Got bogged down in “A Fine Balance”. Thought I would finish that first (but have not)
I read Ethan Frome for the first time a few weekends ago, would highly recommend to anyone who liked The Age of Innocence. It is a much different book overall, but in my opinion a really great novella. @Sarah thanks for the Edith Wharton introduction!
Blazed through Kavalier and Clay over Thanksgiving. I’m sure I missed a million little nuances and bread crumbs but loved the book. Unlike the last one, I’ll try to get my thoughts out behind a spoiler bar before I forget everything.
Took me nine days to finish (for the second time) and I loved it as much, if not more, the second go round.
Do we have an actual date? Knowing that we tend to do Wednesdays, I will put the poll up but one day (December 23) is a hard no for me, and I’m assuming the 24 is also a no fly zone. So here are our options:
- Wednesday, December 16, 6:00 PST
- Thursday, December 17, 6:00 PST
- Tuesday, December 22, 6:00 PST
- Tuesday, December 29, 6:00 PST

I really like the 16th! I have no concerns I’ll finish it by then.
Week of Christmas will be hard, especially the closer we get.
Yeah I cut it off on the 22nd but I think ideally we do it the week prior.
Oh man I need to read faster
