Love seeing Solito taking the lead! Hoping we decide on something soon so I can start reading again!
Yeah I was waiting for a few more votes - 12 seems pretty good, though. Happy to call it and choose Solito – with the holidays and such, I’m guessing we probably can’t meet until sometime in January.
Throwing out January 18, as a potential date to discuss?
Totally missed this. I’m sorry! Looking forward to the next meeting!
I didn’t vote for this month’s because I thought I would still be finishing up Interior Chinatown. When I first joined the Refuge and found this thread you all were in the middle of reading it, so I didn’t pounce on it, but it has been on my list for a while and I was bummed I missed it. I grabbed it after I finished my last book, and honestly, I don’t think I have read a book as quickly as this one. I don’t know if it is related to the short length/style of writing and print or if I just genuinely was enthralled. After a string of mostly non-fictions, this was a welcomed change of pace.
The topic itself and style of writing was very very eye opening and interesting. Really enjoyed it and can only imagine the book club’s discussion of the same would open up entire sub-plots I missed.
@Prof_D - I would be very interested in another Spring Seminar reading! I’d love to see any novels that you might suggest, but I would be up for more Faulkner or, if folks were up for something a bit more modern, something like Cormac McCarthy’s Blood Meridian. Looking forward to it!
Is everyone cool with Solito for January 18?
I’d also love a chance to try at Blood Meridian again. I couldn’t do it last time …
Let’s do it! I’ve been meaning to come post my support
75% done with solito already and it’s great! Stoked to finally get involved after a year of lurking. Anyone else finding it hard to translate a lot of the phrases? It’s sparked me to ask our Developers at work for a better solution in Libby.
Started it as well, really enjoying it!
Oh interesting! I don’t own it yet and have it on hold with Libby but i’ll never get it in time. Was debating ordering a hard copy or on Kindle. I always think if an author doesn’t provide translations then he or she is assuming you don’t need it. (But when it’s on Kindle I also sort of worry/wonder that it’s a technical issue where it’s not displaying correctly!)
At first I was trying to translate everything but it’s too frequent so I’m treating it like old English in GOT. If I can somewhat surmise via context I’m not bothering. I would not recommend audio for this reason unless you’re pretty fluent. Hope this helps anyone who has not started yet. That being said it’s the best non fiction I’ve read in a while.
Do you have multiple library cards in Libby? If so big news coming in spring. Multi library search and recommendation feature.
No. I was just wondering about trying to add another library, but only technically belong to one for my county.
NYPL offers paid cards now I think. I have four with our reciprocity here in Ohio and it’s great. Rarely wait for long for most things.
For anyone looking to buy Solito on Kindle, it’s on sale for $2.99 today on Amazon!
I’m about 1/3 of the way through Solito and it’s fantastic so far. Great pick @greebs!
Solid pick for sure! About the same 1/3 progress but got to put the hustle too it before Libby takes it back and I’m waitlisted again.
Are we on track for two weeks? Should we reach out for that date and book update from mods? A minor extension for cross promotion in the Whatcha Reading thread for newbies Nest readers?
if you need an inside hand to move you up the wait list I may know a guy. How’s this work for the newbs? Zoom link upcoming? Should we change the thread title? I am too old to figure out how to do that.
Sorry I’ve been MIA – I’d love to do another deep dive but honestly I haven’t had time to think about it yet. The reason might be of interest…this spring I’m teaching a class that’s a semester-long deep-dive into Moby Dick. From the start of the semester until spring break they’ll read things like selections from the bible, Milton’s Paradise Lost, a couple Shakespeare plays (Hamlet & King Lear), some 19th century American lit stuff, and then we’ll spend the last 7 weeks just reading Moby-Dick really slowly. I’ve been wanting to do something like this for a long time, so prepping for it has been taking a lot of time and mental energy. I’m not sure that I’ll have it in me to do a Refuge Deep Dive this spring, but maybe we can do something like Poe in the fall. His one novel The Adventures of Arthur Gordon Pym would be a great candidate for a slow read, or we could just do a handful of short stories during spooky season.
I’m on track but if we want to push it out, just holler.
