Philadelphia

Well, folks, I finally got around to calling PV to get an official rejection and they confirmed they are “no longer carrying on the tradition” of allowing spectators at the Crump Cup.

A sad day for us all.

Now I have to break it to my wife that I will have to dedicate all of our spare time and money to qualifying for the Crump Cup.

Might be easier to just get a PV membership than to qualify for the Crump.

Is there (or perhaps, was there) a par 3 course around Ivyland? I vaguely remember playing one years ago when I was living in Abington. Most of my rounds back then were played at the chip & putt at Alverthorpe Park.

Yes but it is gone now. Spring Mill used to have a pitch and putt and mini golf. The course is private and was hurting for a while so they sold the land and condos were built.

Ah okay, makes sense. Thanks for putting an end to my fruitless Google searching and map browsing.

Before I joined my club I was always thinking that this city (actually every city) needs a short course that’s architecturally interesting and you could play it in 60-90 minutes. I think it’d do really well as people would use it instead of just hiring the range.

If you build it they will come.

I’d say that Walnut Lane aka Manayunk Country Club is the closest thing we have to short course? John F Byrne maybe the second closest with par as 67 and 4800+ yds that I can think of? I used to play there so much in high school when everyone first got their licenses and we could take carts finally.

Bensalem CC isn’t a bad little spot for a quick outing and should be close. Respect to who swore off Golden Pheasant, not a fan myself. Until Cobbs Creek is back there’s absolutely nothing immediate to Philly that’s public access that’s worth it in my mind. Even when FDR golf course was open it was like playing a barely mowed field. Don’t even get me started on John F Byrne. If you’re in Bensalem getting up to Bucks/Mercer County is the move and again, for something close Bensalem isn’t bad. It was always lower on the rotation and can be busy with league stuff but there’s some fun holes and nothing completely ridiculous like at Byrne. How people don’t regularly get injured there is a mystery.

Forgot to mention I grew up in the town where Snipes is. It’s fun. The shortest shot you’ll hit is ~30 yards and the longest ~85. A lot of the times the greens are pretty slow but it’s usually putting pretty true and in decent condition, haven’t been in awhile though so not sure what it’s looking like currently. They may still keep the lights on this time of year until 10 PM which is always fun playing a little night golf. Wedge and putter is all you need.

Lol. Love that Springfield is allllll the way down at the bottom :joy::joy: Used to play there a bunch before I joined Burlington since it’s like 7 minutes away and has a grass range area. But sheesh yah it blows!

It bores me. The green complexes are a 1 out of 10. If not for the plane it would be lower.

Why the Buena Vista hate?
Also, Melrose is a prefer not to play again?? But we had fuuuuun!

That’s JC Melrose. With new management and after playing with a persimmon the ranking is under reconsideration by the committee

It’s also a ripoff. Prices have gone up for 5 years straight and they don’t drop their rates later in the day. They charge $99 at 6:30 in the summer without a 9 hole rate.

This is also how I feel about Riverwinds. Way too expensive.

Isn’t most Philly public golf over priced? I relish my trips back to Michigan where a course like melrose costs 45 on a weekend morning and a place like glen mills is maybe 70.

Why play a place “like” Glen Mills when you can actually tee it up at that holy ground?

I’ll go ahead and grab that 8:10 for us :handshake:
