PGA 2K23 Refuge Tour - Info Post #9562 - S24 Begins 11/25

I have gotten better about paying attention to when it jumps over to pithc. but for the longest time that was the most frustrating thing. now I just go nuclear when it happens and i dont notice it. Especially in a bunker that is 10 ft deep. cause yeah, thats the perfect time for a pitch shot!

I’ve pretty much got this under control now, but it used to happen to me all the time. Not sure if it’s because I have a different mix of clubs now, or because I’ve just gotten better about checking it, but I haven’t had the dreaded full swing distance defaulted to pitch shot in a long time.

That said, the killers now are the pitch shots that you want to hit just a little bit less than max. My lob wedge pitch is 66 yards, so if I want to pitch one 60 yards, it’s tough. The swing meter doesn’t move enough to present a good target and it just looks like a max swing. I’m almost better taking a gap wedge at 86 yards and moving it back to 60 yards just to present a better swing meter target.

I was 6 under in round three last night, 19 under for the tourney, looking at making a run for 3rd in Strapped B. Come to the par 5, I think 14th. Messed up the drive and somehow pushed it OB right, which I never do. No worries, I can make par still. Hit a good second drive. My approach is short. Looking at bogey now. Then some-fucking-how I slow the pitch down so much I miss the green again. I get it up and down for double and ruin my shot at a good score. I almost threw my controller at the screen. The shitty slow pitch is ALWAYS lurking.

Easily my favorite dumb thing about this game. Hit a pitch shot fast it goes 5 yards left and 5 yards long. Hit a pitch slow and goes 30 yards right and 30 yards short. And your normal full swing tempo will always be slow on a pitch because why not.

This thread is going straight to my soul. I stopped hitting pitch shots three tourneys ago

Equally bad as the slow pitch shot is the pitch shot that’s like <5% below the target swing percentage, but somehow only goes half the distance you’re trying to hit the ball. The swing power to distance ratio for pitch shots is bonkers sometimes.

dude, this is the woooorrrsssttt.gif

My favorite is when you set up at let’s say, 90% swing. You hit it 91% and it goes 10 yards past. 89% maybe goes 2 yards short. Fast swing goes 5 yards past. Slow swing 30 yards short. None of it calibrated against each other,.

I was thinking about this the other day and I think this is actually something the game gets right. With a full swing in real golf, a slight mistake one way or the other doesn’t usually cause a major error. You catch it a tad thin or a tad fat, and it makes a difference, but you may still be on the green. But get a little quick on a 70 yard pitch shot and you’re blading that thing 20 yards over the green. Decelerate on the downswing, and you’re chunking it about 20 yards. In theory, pitch shots should have bigger consequences for mishits (how the game determines a mishit is another issue altogether). It manifests itself in putting the same way, though, which is dumb.

I find with lighter winds, I score better when I take a fairway wood and lay it back to 100-110 yards over taking driver to 50 yards. I played a lot of the third round at TOC like that. Give me a light wind and I’m dropping full lob wedges with six feet every time.

Playing to a full LW or SW that 1) can stop quickly on very firm greens and 2) you can more easily control distance on is a wonderful play.

Now try calculating wedge distance with a 10+ mph wind :joy::joy::joy:

I am out of retirement & back in the game. Haven’t joined the society yet so will likely post my qualifying in the next event, but I’m weirdly excited to get back in the mix.

Does anyone think that maybe this game is ultimately just a fancy Rory McIlroy simulator?

I can thread a needle from 300 yards out with the driver in my hand, but have to grind when I’ve got a wedge in my hands, and am either on an absolute heater with the putter or seemingly fighting yips (no in-between).

60 yard shot with 10+ MPH downwind is the hardest shot in this game.

Speaking of problems with slow pitch shots…?

Would be nice to know exactly what they are doing…

And maybe we can finally get punch shots!
