Nebraska definitely beats Kansas especially when you save a credit. Sand Hills probably tops Prairie Dunes and Omaha/Lost Rail/Prairie Club would beat out the other Kansas privates. Sand Creek Station, Buffalo Dunes, and Firekeeper are pretty cool Kansas publics but would lose out to Wild Horse and the rest of the Nebraska options.
Indianaās pricetag was waaay too expensive for me and TC, especially relative to its top three.
I can understand that for the two of you. But I wouldnāt be the Pete Dye fan boy if I didnāt select it. The Publics there loom large for me especially as well and French Lick is a top tier resort that doesnāt get enough credit. Purdue, PFAU, Brickyard Crossings, Notre Dame, all winners.
I mean, I have this thread for a reason.
Also, as Iām watching the video you guys went straight off the private courses only for the limited selection. When you posted it on here you included in the high end resorts which I think makes it a lot more nuanced and bumps Indiana up with French Lick being included in their lineup while other states (like Ohio) I had to lose some private courses.
Editors note: I made my list before I watched your video
Only fitting I ride for my state:
Hawaii: 2 Bucks
Private/High End Resorts:
- Nanea
- Kapalua
- Mid Pacific
Muni/Military: Kahuku, Klipper, Mamala Bay, Wailua, Koāolau
Side Note: If TC could get a Hawaiian Driverās License it would drop almost every public course below 100 dollars.
Have you ever heard of any discussions of restoring any of Raynorās ideas at Mid Pacific? How much of the original land remains?
Most of the land is now swallowed up by housing.

Current Day:
Still a fantastic course with some great views.
Hereās my list from smallest to largest (not the order Iād pick them):
Nebraska (2) - Sand Hills, Omaha CC, Prairie Club
Hawaii (2) - Kapalua, Nanea, Waialae
Kansas (3) - Prairie Dunes, Flint Hills National, KCCC
Oregon (5) - Bandon Trails, Bandon Dunes, Pacific Dunes
Massachusetts (8) - Brookline, Myopia, Old Sandwich
Washington (9) - Chambers Bay, Gamble Sands, Sahalee (counting Chambers as a resort not muni, could do Aldarra or the new Gamble Sands instead)
New Jersey (10) - Pine Valley, Baltusrol, Somerset Hills
North Carolina (11) - Pinehurst #2, Old Town Club, Tobacco Road (swap with Mid Pines if TR counts as public not resort)
@Tron - I need to challenge you to get see some of the Dayton area public golf the next time youāre in that area. Itās really solid as well.
Not even a top 2 private on Oahuā¦
Conflicted on seeing NJ on peopleās lists. Obviously Pine Valley is amazing. And I think Somerset is generally underrated and is one of the best in the country. But the state must be one of the worst for public golf. Has to be the state with the biggest delta between the public and private options. Georgia probably second. Neshanic always gets recognized as one of the best publics in the state, but Iāve always found it pretty bland. Rock Springs has a cool architectural past with the Raynor connection, but has been neglected way too long and is severely over priced. The crystal springs courses arenāt great and are over priced. Architects is my personal favorite in the state, but tbh isnāt much more than a replica course. I personally have not spent much time golfing in southern Jersey, so hopefully they have it better down there than on the north side of the state.
BTW, there are a few municipal Charles Banks courses near Newark that were neglected for a long time, but I believe recently renovated. Anyone have an update on those?
I had never been to Rhode Island before my daughter moved there in 2023 for college. Now, Iāve played golf all over the state. Criminally underrated.
The NJ pick was definitely more because of the privates than the public courses. Itās possible the Mass clubs make the NJ picks a bit redundant but I wanted some more east coast private clubs and NY was too expensive. Was kind of deciding between NJ and Michigan/Wisconsin and picked the better private options since I already had some Midwest offerings with KS and NE.

I havent given this a full watch but i saw the instagram clip and it instantly triggers me with the private course slant. All those courses in Long Island and CA mentioned are not playable for 99.9% of golfers so it instantly infuriates me. Is my bias/slant wrong and I should give it a full watch? Or should I just avoid because it will infuriate me?

Neither of them pick CA or NY. You should be fine. They pick states with private courses anyone can get on like ANGC and Crystal Downs.
I enjoyed the episode. Itās a fun, meaningless exercise even if youāre not going to play some of the courses mentioned.
I think you should definitely skip it.
Next time weāll make sure and only discuss courses that we are positive every potential viewer has definitely played.
Well we need the secret code to Nanea first
