Between the never tried pasta and accusations that the Schuster’s didn’t pay their debts, some spicy stuff to end that office hours edition.
Love the takes on the over commercialization of the event. It’s a sports problem overall, but yeah, the Ryder Cup has it big time.
Take the Ryder Cup at $150m annually ($300m biannually).
Add in US Open and Masters at $100m each plus PGA and Open at $75m each.
So $500m in annual revenue from 5 biggest events. But those 5 only pay out $85m in purses. How many other major professional sports only pay out 17% of their biggest events to the players? (NCAA is a whole other story)
Not saying Ryder Cup is solely to blame. It’s a systemic problem that was put in place decades ago. But it is a problem.
The weirder part is I’ll try the street food in Thailand or Argentina no questions asked.
Just not the nasty noodles.
A man has to have a code
What did I just watch?! I typically enjoy Office Hours but can’t believe the takes from BamaBearcat on this one.
Saying has become too commercial, so you don’t like it? I mean one could say that about every sport/event fans care about. Example: I’m a college football fan, now we’ve got NLI deals, conference re-alignment, a playoff- THAT is a major change in commercialization in a relatively small amount of time. Comparatively, I just don’t think the structure of the Ryder cup hasn’t changed that much (other than venue selection) which ultimately as a fan is what I care about.
Man I sent the link to my casual golf friends before I watched the video- I was trying to get them hyped for the event. Now I’m watching in horror as BamaBearcat just shreds it lol. Thanks for fighting the good fight Soly.
FWIW I think NCAA football is about to drive off a cliff.
My other problem with the Ryder Cup (which we cut for time) is I just can’t wrap my head around cheering for somebody like PReed against Rory just because of the colors of their shirts for one week a year. I would probably feel differently if golf was a team sport every week.
I also found it offensive when the US team did crap like wear the camo hats. Hard pass.
I find the jingoistic nature of it on both sides to be too much. I’ll watch some of it but genuinely couldn’t care less who wins. You are not alone
Yes - that’s a great counter.
How great would it be if they did a Survivor-type Hero’s vs Villains:
Rory/Hov/Scottie/Homa vs Koepka/Reed/JT/Rahm (?)
I just realized there’s not one Euro I don’t like
Poulter, Westwood, Casey, Garcia, McDowell
One current Euro… all of this, except McDowell, can burn in hell
I’ve grown very weary of Hatton on course. Some of the new guys are fine.
And I like Rahm a lot, but this week it’s kinda easy for me to pull against him
I fucking love him. His Opus Dei on course antics are the best. So entertaining and a hell of a golfer
It’s worn extremely thin over the last year for me.
Inspired by the new episode, @BamaBearcat, I wanted to share the only semi-rare book I own: The Chronicles of Golf: 1457-1857 by Alastair Johnston (if any of you don’t know who he is, here is an article which even talks about the book: An Incomplete Biography - The Golfer’s Journal). Mr. Johnston also still lives here in Cleveland given his history with IMG.
The book is an annotated chronicle of every written English-language reference to golf from the Scottish Acts of Parliament of 1457 through 1857, when The Golfer’s Manual - the first book on the game that enjoyed widespread circulation - was published. It is super cool and not at all nerdy.
I have 774/900.
I will echo @BamaBearcat 's advice for using your library’s Interlibrary Loan process. Availability of titles is hit-and-miss, but it is definitely worth a shot.
I was able to request and check out George Bahto’s The Evangelist of Golf for $3. What a deal. I somehow scored a purchase from an eBay saved search and got it for a steal.
This needs to stay in the Nest for two more months, but help is on the way for those of you looking for a copy of The Evangelist of Golf
Expect an announcement early next year that will make the book MUCH more affordable.
