OATW Match Play - 2025 Second Round Underway?

You’re our first Semi-Finalist! Congrats!

Also, the bracket is moving along pretty nicely and I appreciate ALL of you guys being open about scheduling and getting these matches rolling. Maybe the easiest bracket to run so far out of the first three years of doing this.

You guys should duel at Tiki.

@Creags and I had a great back and forth match, though not our most premiere rounds of golf. The greens at CCC were absolutely nuts. I believe those will have marked the fastest greens played for myself. I had 40 putts (like wtf). A 4 putt showed itself early and I was in a total mind blender all day. A solid approach game kept me in it and I nabbed a pair of back 9 birdies. Nate kept it steady with some solid putting but cooled off late and let me grab the match 3&2. I look forward to squaring up again in the future.

I await @wreckhockey and @PlumbBobMillionaire

Damn, we might need Firepit Collective to do one more episode of their LAB series

Great playing by Jack, my short game did me no favors especially when I had a chance to square the match on 15. Great fun playing in the match play again.

CCC is getting spicy, should be in prime shape for the finale later this summer.

@auribe14 and I had our quarter final match today at SCC. We are coming in to the match with almost the same handicap so the match was played straight up.

We both started with bogeys on 1, which I’m sure many would agree is a decent start. From there we took turns winning holes with pars or bogeys going back to back until Aaron was the first to win two holes back to back. We made the turn with @auribe14 up 1.

We both pushed are drives left on 10 and ended up tying the hole with bogeys. At this point I went on a run of 4 straight pars that timed up with a couple of errant tee shots from Aaron at the worst time. I was able to close out the match on 16 winning 4&2.

In the end I had the my best round of the season shooting a 41 on the back while hitting my driver better than I have all season.

As always, golfing with Aaron was a great time. Nest and especially OATW golf partners remain undefeated in being a good time.

Quick update from the Tiki at the Kiki…

@wreckhockey and I had a heavyweight bout that featured eight birdies, a near personal best and only one hole won with bogey. @Gobrownies09 witnessed the showdown.

I think it’s safe to say that neither one of us gave a single hole away on Saturday, instead when one of us did win a hole, we did it by playing good-to-great golf.

Jason was in complete control all day and ended the match on 15, thanks mostly to a poor teeshot from myself and slightly due to some septuagenarian dickhead screaming to his playing partners while looking for his golf ball that apparently went 100 yards offline into the woods on 18.

Jason also won the gross and net scoring at Tiki for playing is ass off.

As always…this match play series is one of the highlights of my golf season. I love this shit

Remember that amazing match summary by @PlumbBobMillionaire…enter PillowFight 2024 by @wreckhockey and @jack67 in the quarterfinal match. We were able to get out to Ellsworth Meadows and Jason was able to join my traveling league to get our match in. As usual, EM was in great condition and had true rolling greens and bouncy landings.

We scraped together two birdies, bogeys beat doubles, a par bested a double on a pop, three three putts, two shanks, nuclear long irons into the hay, cart path balls, misread putts, cross green chips, chunk tee shots followed by topped tee shots etc etc. I’ll let you guess who did what but I will own those two shanks.

All said, the match never exceeded one up. We went back and forth. And we stacked some good shots towards the end. Two birdie looks on 16 went awry. My eagle look on 17 just missed as did Jason’s birdie and we went to 18 with me +1. Two distant birdie looks on 18 missed and I took the match +1.

@wreckhockey knocking out two matches in 24 hours is provocative

Amazing write ups and content everyone. Definitely agree with @pjsutherland that @wreckhockey going that hard to play back to back matches is indeed amazing. No one asked him to do that and he did it anyway. True sicko stuff there.

We’re down to our Semi-Finalists!

In the SouthWest Region we have @PersistentlyOverPar vs @methridge in the battle of Springfield CC vs Losantiville CC - I recommend you two find a neutral site to battle it out.

In the NorthEast Region we have @spicychimis vs @jack67 in the battle of the newcomer vs the old head - will Steve’s run continue or will Jack finally make a Final?

No rush on figuring out match timing at the moment. We have plenty of buffer room to play with after everyone did such a great job getting in their matches so far. I’m going to do my best to try and make sure my schedule allows me to be at the Finale at Columbus CC to hand over the trophy personally. I cannot wait to see how this shakes out!

Good luck everyone!

Very provocative. Jason and I played three straight days, Oberlin, Manakiki, and then Ellsworth. Pretty epic golf weekend.

I should also recap my match with @vwhitehead4417. Vincent has been out to LCC a couple times in the last year so we met up at Miami Whitewater Forest on Saturday with @twturner and @Blong4250 as markers.

After pulling his opening tee shot into the tall stuff and taking a drop, Vincent lost the lead early and spent the round trying to get it back. I can’t say there was anything notable about my game that day, but I stayed in nearly every hole. My six pars forced Vincent to go for birdies, but that wasn’t even enough when we both birdied the par 5 12th and mine counted for a net eagle.

Following a pair of pars (one for net bird) on 15, the real match started on the short par 4 16th that we play straight up and I am 2up. My blocked drive leaks right and I find myself in the rough, blocked out by two trees. VW stripes his drive and leaves himself a flip wedge onto the green. I punch out and chip to a tap-in par. Vincent gets on the green with a 15 footer and sinks the putt, keeping the match alive.

We push 17 and go into 18 1up. Once again, my drive leaks just a little too far right and I find myself in tree trouble in a very wet patch of the course. I responsibly reach for my medicine but fumble the bottle with a punch that doesn’t quite make it out of trouble. Vincent makes another smooth birdie and we end the match all square. Clearly, the real winner is the GHIN system.

We agree to a chip off and walk to the smaller, empty practice green across the street near 11 green and 12 tee box. Our markers facilitate the contest by placing our balls, measuring the proximity and ensuring there is no funny business afoot. We flip a tee and VW chips first while I turn my back and bide my time. A group of young hooligans arrives at 12 green with house music bumping and I quickly get in my zone. I am summoned to the chipping box with my ball sitting up in the rough and I make a stroke to get the ball on the green and let it roll out to about five feet. Our markers proclaim no measurement is needed and the match is over. I assume Vincent chipped in, so I turn and ask who actually won, quickly learning that my chip was closer and I would advance to the Final Four.

Always a pleasure to get out with @vwhitehead4417, even when we are both completely soaked in sweat by the third hole.
