I volunteer to play the role of Jeff Knox for that match!
It. Is. TIMEEEEEEE
Needing to go through a local club is so dumb. I get it from their perspective but it’s anti-consumer and just pissed me off. Most people are not members of private clubs and most munis are awful about managing this shit. Just let me sign up on USGA dot com and get a number.
I agree with you @smithburger. It’s why I basically never had an index until the last two years thanks to Grint.
Then I found out I could get one via MVGA which actually helps their bottom line and growth locally so I was happy to switch.
I agree. The whole mechanism of doing it through local clubs is anachronistic.
Never understood you couldn’t just sign up through the USGA itself but whatever, I go down to Big Met in March and putt for 15 minutes and go pay for it to be reactivated. Kind of a ritual for me now.
If you stayed for six more hours, maybe more, you’d have the true Big Met experience.
Oh I have had the pleasure before. And if its warm and there’s beers I don’t mind. But slogging through the mud in cooler weather for 6 hours is something I only want to have done once.
There’s are 4 holes out there I almost like (6-9 on the front, “dassit”), but I don’t like them enough to volunteer for that place unless I’m invited by a friend who really wants to play Big Met. The back 9 out there is truly awful.
If I’m getting in an E9 or farting around with my swing, I’ll play Mastick or Little Met. The conditions are similar and the vibe is better. Big Met is a glacially-paced d-bag magnet.
Good Morning Match Play thread!
Over the weekend I had an idea for a way to help raise more funds for charity via this tournament.
THIS IDEA IS COMPLETELY OPTIONAL AND UP TO INDIVIDUAL COMPETITORS
The idea here would simply be that we would bet on ourselves as players and what our outcomes will be during our Match Play rounds. Each person who wants to participate would choose a stat, or multiple stats (fairways hit, greens hit, net birdies, holes won, matches won, bunkers hit, balls lost, etc get creative), then they set a donation amount per each of these for the duration of their time in the tournament and make a donation once they get eliminated or after the Final.
As an example I’ll give you what I think is going to be my personal baseline donation amount here
- $0.50 per NET birdie
- $1 per match lost
- $2 per match tied
- $5 per match won
My donations will be going to the MVGA for their “Youth On Course” initiative. And I might add another donation trigger later if I feel like my donation amount might be too low.
Thoughts? Anyone else willing to jump in here with me?
I wouldn’t mess with stats, but I like those figures for matches won/tied. I don’t plan on losing any so I won’t concern myself with that.
Sweet!
Any idea what charity you’d donate to? Or just decide later?
Who can say? Charity we end up with in Cleveland I imagine.
I like it but I’d rather just donate a sum of money because my stats are most likely not going to be good and hard to track. Does first tee have a Cleveland chapter?
That’s why I made my stats super easy to track. Birdies and outcomes. But that’s totally understandable.
And YES they do! https://firstteecleveland.org/
For my Cleveland guis, I’ll throw out Zelie’s Home as a possible non-profit that could really use the funds. It used to be a part of a nationwide system of similar charities, but COVID saw them cut from that ecosystem and instead of closing up shop, they’ve doubled down locally and have really grown.
If you’d like some more info - just give me a shout.
What are your home courses? Want to get an idea what I may be up against. Also please send me your linkedin so I can stalk you.
