OATW and FCF present: The Rust Belt Rumble 4/20/24

I added myself to the list….was that ok to do?

Yeah you’re good. When the waitlist was longer I just didn’t want folks jumping the line or anything like that

Looks like you may have filled up, but I’m available if you still need to fill the spot. Otherwise happy to jump on the waitlist in case any more spots unexpectedly open up.

I’ll give Evan a day or so to let me know if he’d like to be moved to the roster. If we don’t hear from him, you’ll be in

Sorry for the delayed response…just got off a plane fresh from the beaches in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. :slightly_smiling_face:

I am IN!!!

Apparently it’s going well, so let me add this nugget…we took a 6-night trip to an all-inclusive resort and flew roundtrip for a total out-of-pocket cost of $435. Rough life, I guess. Oh, and I got to play two rounds of golf as well!!!

Alright, gentlemen. The time has come to finalize rosters and get payments in.

@spicychimis @quicktempo you guys are getting called up to the roster after a couple of drop outs.

The cost is going to be $95. You can pay me via Venmo @/mattconley76, or PayPal/Zelle Conjr76@gmail.com. Please include your name and refuge handle so I can mark you down. This gets you 36 holes of golf, range balls to warm up, lunch (choice of panini, 2 dogs, or 2 brats, with chips and a fountain drink), small tee gift(s), charitable donation, and two tickets to the M4X raffle. The catch to the raffle tickets is that the winning team gets all the tickets.

Tee times will start at 8am with a shotgun or modified shotgun start. We will start on the Wolverine 9. Next we will be on the Irish course starting at 11. After lunch we will go to the Buckeye course at 230, and finish back on Irish beginning at 5.

Because of the possible time constraints, we are encouraging cart usage. Not saying you cant walk, but please be mindful of pace and how the format may effect how quickly each set of 9 may go.

As for the format, the plan we’ve put down in pencil, but are open to discussing and changing based on what you guys think, is:
*Singles by handicap rank (sort indexes 1-16, you play the person with your same ranking)
*2 man best ball
*alt shot
*singles by captains pick (done presidents cup style, where captains alternate throwing out a name and the other captain gets to match them)

Matt and I discussed doing pairings and matchups over zoom/teams if players would want to jump on and make a fun time of it, so let us know if you have any interest in that. We will also be wanting to hear from our players about who they’d like to be paired with for best ball and alt shot, and who they’d want to play against from the other side. Maybe we will go in a different direction, but it’s always good to know who feels comfortable or familiar with someone else’s game.

I know most of us are fairly local, but if you’re someone coming in from a little further away need to come in on Friday and stay in order to make the early tee time, I’m sure we could get a practice round in somewhere. I’d also be able to put one or two people up at my place in Findlay if you don’t want to pay for a hotel/airbnb, as long as you aren’t allergic to cats.

Lastly, I’m really excited for this, and I hope you guys are too. I’m going to try to make everything go as smooth as possible, so bear with me if there’s a few bumps. My wife may come out to take some professional-ish photos for us to use on socials, and hopefully be able to help direct traffic as need be. Ultimately this is for fun and a chance to hang out with folks we don’t get the chance to see very often, but also I hope everyone playing genuinely wants to win this silly competition.

If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to @Manhattan or I, but definitely try me first since Matt is busy with M4X stuff in addition to this.

I know you can do that, but I paid the wrong person once because I used that option and don’t like taking that chance

Ohhhhhh some extra special stakes on top of the bragging rights. I like that.

This could be fun for the first three rounds maybe. But I feel like doing the final singles pairings “live” on the day in front of everyone would be pretty special and ramp up the tension. I know that might put a little extra stress/tension on the captains to be making those picks quickly between the alt shot and final singles but I think it’d be a lot of fun.

Understandable. I’ve used it for illegal gambling purposes for so long I’ve just gotten used to triple checking names and using that option, so I probably should remember not everyone has the same bad habits

100% agree. We talked about it. The big concern is just having the time to do it and still finish before dark. Maybe I’m just being too cautious about that, though. I think the course manager I’ve spoken to was planning to have us go off in normal tee times for rounds 2-4, but maybe we could swing at least a partial shotgun start for the final round. If we did that in foursomes, it would likely guarantee we get done on time.

We could also maybe do the singles picks during the lunch break when we have a little extra time. Only have 2 rounds to go off of instead of 3, but it might make it logistically easier

This isn’t a bad idea. Gives the captains two rounds of #data to see how people are playing on the day before making their picks.

For the best ball and alt shot are we finishing out all 9 holes no matter what or are we stopping when a team takes down the win?

Will probably leave that up to your discretion. You’re paying for 36 holes of golf, so I’m not telling anyone they can’t play 36 holes. We will just have a schedule made up of what time we need you to be at the clubhouse or next tee box, so just make sure you get there in time
