No Laying Up: Influencer Tour (Southern New England)

First time posting a topic, but I did not see one created in the “NLU Content Discussion” category and I think @system is the only deity powerful enough to post a new topic in there. If I missed a more appropriate forum for this, feel free to redirect.

I just wanted to give @MerchCzar & @djpie their flowers for this video. It was right in my Q zone. It also had everything that makes NLU content great:

  1. First and foremost, great bits.
  2. Something informative about the golf industry (what happens at these industry events with pros, how a golf ball is made).
  3. A peek over the fence at a beautiful private course that most of us won’t get the chance to play.
  4. A recommendation for a public gem that maybe folks hadn’t heard of.
  5. A shout out to good stewardship.

I go back and forth on whether I prefer these smaller travel episodes (Milwaukee and Northern Ireland were also great) over a season long Tourist Sauce. I think both have their merit and whichever fits the team’s schedules that year is probably best.

Also, definitely recommend trying Fenwick (and Shenny) next time you guys are out this way. If you need to be crowbarred into the tee sheet at Fenwick, let me know. Understandably, it’ll probably be a while before the Connecticut shoreline makes its way back onto your travel list, but it could pair nicely with either:

  • A visit to Yale once it reopens (could even take the train between the two and report into the Trap Draw #infrastructure).
  • A family trip to Mystic in better weather (kids love the Aquarium, Seaport, and Drawbridge Ice Cream; parents love the sneaky good food scene).

Once again, great job and looking forward to the rest of the video content this year!

I am a little biased since Marion is a course I have come to play quite often recently, but this was one of my favorite NLU vids. Just great vibes for the entire hour.

I was really happy to see Will get some screen time at Marion. He and his team have been working really hard the last couple of years. I have been playing that course for almost 20 years and they have it in the best shape I have ever seen it.

The video quality and drone shots were tops. Really great production all around

Was almost relieved they didn’t make it to Fenwick since I love that course and don’t want it to get even more crowded by more people hearing about it

I think what I like about this format compared to Tourist Sauce is this seems so much more doable for me at this stage of my life compared to Tourist Sauce. Those videos are awesome and truly “dare to dream” stuff, but I’m a lot more likely right now to pick somewhere I can drive to with friends and play.

A lot of NLU content makes me want to go play golf, but these videos get that going for me the most.

Mystic Seaport is sick. Gotta check out the museum

But I’m mostly here to complain about this video getting a Les Miserables song stuck in my head. I was not ready for that.

That drone flyover of the house on 6 fairway was cool … that pool must get sooo many golf balls … very cool seeing a place I play often in a video

I’ve definitely had mixed feelings about Marion becoming the IYKYK course. I used to just roll up and play as a single, and these days I actually have to make a tee time and get paired with randos. It causes me to have to fight the “I liked this band before they were popular” feelings but I do that by reminding myself that the 2 other courses I played the most getting back in to golf were also easy to get tee times and now one is housing and one is a figure skating rink. Crowded beats the alternative.

Another great option in that part of the region is Winnapaug in Westerly. A little rough around the edges, but a real fun Ross layout, easy to get on and affordable.

Really enjoyed this video. Great mix of golf and “influencing.” Always love the vibe when DJ and Neil get together.

I’ve been monitoring the ownership situation there. I know there have been various plans to redevelop or improve it, but it seems to be stuck. I always thought it would be a cool project for something like NLU or Fried Egg to purchase and improve, similar to what Tom Coyne did with Sullivan County (not saying it’s feasible just that it would be cool). Decent layout, and the location is pretty great. It’s squeezed in between some world class courses (Misquamicut, Shelter Harbor, Weekapaug). Big summer destination area (which I bet will only get bigger after a certain pop star and football player’s wedding will be located there). Definitely rough around the edges though.

The ownership situation stinks. But we made it our home course this year because it was the only place we could get out at 7am. We all drove 45 min to play there.

When I heard Weekapaug mentioned, I was waiting for some mention of grooves.

Never a doubt.

Fenwick is currently redoing the first and ninth greens. We had an event scheduled there for last Sunday, and unfortunately, this past August, we had to make the call to cancel it

Great little track, highly recommend

They’ve done a lot of great work on it. They just took down the power lines along the street on 4.
