NLU Pod - 1991 Ryder Cup Deep Dive

Also, this tidbit from the '87 Ryder Cup wiki:
" Eamonn Darcy, who previously had a very poor Ryder Cup record, defeated Ben Crenshaw at the last hole to get Europe to 13 points. Crenshaw had broken his putter in a moment of frustration after the sixth hole and putted with his 1 iron for the last dozen holes."

Wild stuff. Eamonn Darcy was 0-8-2 in his RC career going in to that match. Never would have guessed that from Crenshaw (w/ a casual 3-8-2 career RC record)

Saw the pod title and wasn’t sure if it was my cup tea. So glad I decided to listen. What an episode! Great work @Soly, loved every minute of it.

Excellent episode, went in completely blind with no knowledge of the ā€˜91 RC, or any Ryder Cup for that matter.

Felt like I was listening to an audiobook and I loved every second of it.

Making me kick myself for not buying tickets when I got into the raffle last year, and has me looking at the market for weekend tickets this year.

After listening to the Recap pod for this week on the PGA Tour, this post from Sunday (a day before the pod) feels validated hearing from @Soly

Late to the party, but enjoyed the pod. My thoughts:

  1. As an American who remembers the Gulf war (and the 1991 Ryder Cup) very well, I didn’t like Pavin’s camo cap then or now. You’re playing golf, not going to war (or hunting). And your opponents in that golf match are from countries that just fought in a real war - on the same side as your country.

  2. Raymond Floyd was a badass. I saw something earlier in the thread that I just couldn’t believe, so I looked it up. It’s actually even stronger than what was posted. Raymond Floyd was ranked 14th in the world at the end of 1992, over a year after the 91 RC, at the age of 50. What Stricker has done the last few years is pretty amazing, but I don’t think he was ranked anywhere near this high at 50.

  3. Seve could be a jerk, but this has to be one of the greatest lines to use in a match against your buddies, especially if you can pull off a Spanish accent, "OK, if you want to play that way, we can play that way.

Scarface was released in '83… can you imagine Seve, impersonating Tony Montana, saying this exact quote, or is it just me?

This is an opinion I can get down with. As a 19-K that was in Iraq in '91, the faux patriotism, especially in the name of ā€œhonoring veterans and the troopsā€ has always rubbed me wrong. Like, your participating in a sporting event. You want to honor the troops and veterans in that setting? Fine. Play hard. Leave the theatrics at home.

It bothers me when ā€œfansā€ do it as well. ā€œKaep is un-American. He’s shitting on veterans and the military.ā€ Nah chief. He’s using his constitutional right to bring change. Sit down.

Granted, I didn’t join the military as some patriotic gesture ala Pat Tillman, but I am proud of my service. To see athletes and fans politicize or overdo the patriotism angle is off putting. A whole lot of people spew a whole lot of bullshit in the name of honoring veterans and active military members when their best course of action would be to keep their mouths shut.

One of my biggest questions the more I think about this revolves around Kiawah. I find it really strange that the Ryder Cup was going there before the course was event finished but then it took another 21 years for it to host the PGA Championship.

I realize it hosted the PGA Professional Championship and Senior PGA in the 2000s but the wait for the 2012 PGA Championship seems odd

I cannot think of a take with which I’d more strongly agree. Thank you for your service.
