NLU Peloton Thread - Weekly Ride: 30 minute 2010’s Hip Hop Ride with Ally from 7/25/24

The Ibiza Chill Out 10 min full body stretch? My favorite one.

Massive Attack and London Grammer? Yes please. And pigeon is my favorite.

I’ll have to check that out. This one was a 20 minute ride that was part of a collaboration series with the ministry of sound. His play by play of the experience in Ibiza clubs was :100:

How often does everyone re-test their FTP? I overindex on PZ rides but the every 4-6 week suggestion is aggressive. They are utter misery (especially when you let off the pedals at 0:00 but the computer is still measuring for a second or two and you tie your PR).

MFW planning on doing a steady state moderate ride, but Jess King opens with three drum & bass bangers and suddenly I’m slipping back into my psychopathic ways and high-fiving everyone on the here now leaderboard as soon as they’re within 10kj, then high-fiving them again when I pass them.

I think a 60min drum and bass ride would kill me.

Back from COVID hibernation. While the ride “felt” easy, I noticed I was hitting Zone 4 much lower than usual, at around 170bpm, so definitely some effects from the sickness.

I have a recurring reminder in my calendar every six weeks. I don’t do that - in fact I went almost nine months between my last two which was way too much time off, because I live in fear of the test. I think every 2-3 months is reasonable, or of course if your gut tells you that your current FTP is wrong.

First time doing a Camila ride for me. Not really my kind of music but she definitely programs a challenging ride.

Once or twice a year.

Honestly, I think the PZP community gets a bit too wrapped up about pushing the FTP # up all the time. Its probably worth retesting often within the first year or so of starting PZ because you’ll improve dramatically, but beyond that if you ride regularly it won’t change enough in 6-8 weeks to matter.

The only time I ever felt like I needed to retest bc my zones were easy was when I stuck to PZ for longer stretches of the year—I didn’t test for 9 months and felt like I could move between Z4/5 precisely without struggle.

Now I test late in the fall to set zones for winter riding and in spring to see how I did.

Given that you pass literally everyone, I am not sure if you are a bad person, a psychopath, or both.

he’s just from St Louis.

We started off so good too…

Then the wife needed me to take the dog to the Animal Hospital for a UTI. Seemed like a fun ride though, will get back on it.

Yeah, I don’t ride much in the warmer months so I re-test at the beginning of the winter. Yesterday was my mid-winter progress report and I’ll aim to break my PR sometime in April. Once or twice a year is a little low if you are making any improvements and taking PZ classes. It’s not ideal to be sticking to PZs below what they realistically should be and it’s annoying to mentally adjust your PZs (eg. making your PZ 3 upper 3 and lower 4) then sticking to those notional new power zones. Still better than suffering through the misery of a monthly test.

I guess i’m the only one who kinda likes the 20min misery?

Like you might literally be the ONLY one. As I’ve told you, my friend described it to me as, “After you take it, you’ll know what drowning feels like.”

It’s never AS bad as I remember it, but it definitely is zero fun at all.

I’m kind of looking forward to taking it again in a couple weeks when I finish the Discover Your Power Zones plan.

Mainly because I know I can do so much better than I originally did so I’m way too motivated.

But was it a class that you’ll come back to time and time again?

Ribbing aside, I absolutely love Ben

A few years ago while living in LA my wife and I would frequent a spin studio Camila coached at. I was never a big spin guy but ended up loving her workouts - we’d only take her classes. Hard to pinpoint what makes a great instructor but she had it. I used to joke with my wife that I liked Camila bc she didn’t try to make spin a spiritual experience like some of the others. Just good energy and a good sweat. And would always make an effort to check-in with everyone after class.

She ended up moving on to a different studio in Santa Monica and we moved out of state (buying a Peloton along the way). Needless to say I was shocked and ecstatic when she was announced as a new instructor. Might not be for everyone but it’s really good to see someone’s hustle pay off. The fitness industry is such a grind.
