To be fair @greebs despite my ability to run fast and bike somewhat well I never do core work, so I was a beginner to core work when I did that series.
I say be bold, take a swing. If it’s too hard you can alter in the workout, she offers both hard and easier versions of the exercises.
I did it also, and it was for sure the most core work I’ve ever put in.
If you’re apprehensive about it. Start out by doing some of the 5min core classes 3x/week for 1-2weeks before you start the program. The program is no joke. I’ll probably start it again this winter.
I had done NOTHING for my core since senior year of high school (1993 for those who are curious) when I started it 2 years back. Very doable. Lots of modifications as others have mentioned. I ran through it three times with some breaks in between and by the time I did that the core programming had expanded and diversified and I found that i could do almost anything the instructors tossed in.
So, these days I do core 4/5x a week. One or two of those are 10 minute sessions, the others are quick 5 minute sessions after a cool down and before a 5 minute stretch.
Another hack I’ve been using is replacing 5 minute cool down rides with 5 minute light arm sessions–I just keep pedaling the whole time. Then I mix in a 10 minute session of arms or two a week.
About how long until you noticed your core actually got stronger? I am starting to realize a lot of issues and pain I have, is due to literally never doing core workouts.
I did Emma’s CYC program and while it’s a pain in the ass and I have no core strength, it was still awesome. I’m thinking of doing it again and permanently incorporating it into my workout regiment. I felt so solid after I did it and def noticed some improvements on the bike and in life in general (lifting my kids was easy).
Slight tangent: has anyone found a good full body program using Peloton? I’d love to do something where it’s 3x rides per week, 3x strength classes, etc. that work your whole body. I used to do a ton of Crossfit and while my cardio output is much higher now than it was back then, I’m missing quite a bit of strength. I know the answer is to probably get back in the gym and do the big three lifts, but looking for something I could feasibly do from home.
I don’t want this to sound discouraging, but it took me a year until one day I realized, “wait, I can do this now because I’m finally strong enough to do it right.”
Again, I literally went 25 years between consistent workouts periods of life—YMMV
Ha - appreciate the compliment @greebs but that wasn’t me! Don’t think I’ve ever ventured into this thread until now, and unfortunately my only core advice is pretty darn basic and completely unrelated to peloton. I read somewhere that if you can do your age in push-ups and sit-ups (or crunches) each day, it’s a solid way to keep a minimum baseline. So I try most days to do at least that - and sadly usually not much else.
Also, make sure you have a good metabolism if you’re a big fan of ice cream.
I did Andy’s total strength program at the start of the year and really enjoyed the workouts and strength improvements from it. You need a pair of light, medium, and heavy dumbbells but otherwise can do it from home. Each week is setup with an upper day lower day and full body day. Andy can be annoying at times but his knowledge and explaining the workouts and the actual combinations themselves are great. I definitely felt stronger after going through it and am thinking of doing it again.
I would just try it out and see how you do. You engage your core while riding the bike so it is probably stronger than you think. I hadn’t done a core workout for two years before I started it. If it starts to get too hard there are modifications or I would suggest what @tnord mentioned by doing some of the 5 min classes a few times a week. I like the crush your core program because it also keeps you accountable and tracks your progress.
Well … don’t get me started on the 90 minute PZ Endurance Ride I took once. Wiped me out for a full day…these folks who ride for hours every day are not mortal
