NLU Peloton Thread - Weekly Ride: 30 minute 2010’s Hip Hop Ride with Ally from 7/25/24

Honestly, It’s not a bad idea to do a good handful of beginner classes to get in the flow of it all. Even if its just adjusting to the seat haha. I’m not comfortable up out of the saddle yet, so I’ve just been working on trying to get a little better each time so eventually I can feel normal up and going. Pretty sure some of the advanced beginner rides are 30min to give you a little extra time but not kill you right away.

I opted for the 30 minute Sweat Steady ride instead. Jess is certainly divisive, but I find her really entertaining in small doses. Mixing in 1 JK class a month, to me, is perfect. I also tried stacking classes for the first time. I stacked JK’s ride with a 10 minute arms/shoulders class with Adrian. Pretty cool feature that I will certainly use more moving forward. Lately, I have found it hard to do 45 minute classes, so I have been doing more 30 minute classes then tacking on a strength, core, or stretch at the end.

I’ve been using the stacking feature the past three days and really enjoying it. Like someone else mentioned the only improvement I’d recommend would be to have this feature on the app to plan workouts further in advance.

Did the weekly ride yesterday. I really like this ride structure. Basically a recovery free power zone ride. You legitimately never know what you’re going to get with Jess which I’m kind of starting to dig a little bit. Sometimes a few off the wall tangents are nice. Anyway, great pick @marklemcd

Can anybody give me some insight into this ride? For a very new rider, just using the app, what am I in for? I really wish the itinerary was more detailed (how many intervals, climbs, etc).

45 mins seems like a lot but I’d be willing to give it a go provided there are minimal climbs.

New rider? Didn’t you put up like a 650+ 30 min ride? Have you cycled in the past? Are you in triathlete shape?

Sweat steadies are endurance interval rides - much longer than the burst intervals in HIIT and Tabata rides, but not at the same sprint intensity.

EDIT: that was @Ballgame - man, threw me for a loop that a new rider was putting up those numbers.

Thanks for the info. I am going to challenge myself and give it a try on my next ride. If I pass out over the handlebars tell my family I love them.

I also just found out that you can “only” stack 10 classes at a time. I learned this because I’m doing the PZ Pack plan and have my next two weekly rides (and the warmup/cooldown/stretches) and wanted to add this ride into the middle of them. This is … not really an issue. I guess ideally I could put a whole week worth of classes in there, but I’d be fine with just doing “tomorrow’s” classes from the app instead of mobile web.

maybe i’m starting to peter out after 12 straight days on the bike since it was delivered, maybe it was the vodka with a rye chaser last night and 1230 bedtime…but I was not feeling it today. that combined with a modestly difficult ride and I barely cracked 300 output on 30 min.

thinking my first yoga class in on the docket for tomorrow for recovery and back at it hard on Friday.

I also moved my seat forward two ticks to E and it felt like I wasn’t riding on my chode quite as much. I’m 6’2’’ with short arms, short legs, all torso. I’m at 31 on height also. I think the handle bars are as high as they can go. Others that are around my same size can you share your bike setup so I can see if I’m in the ballpark?

12 straight days will really take it out of you. Someone posted the Kristin McGee hamstring yoga further up thread, but that one is so good. You should definitely take that.

my 12 straight includes some low impact/beginner rides. I’ve never taken a yoga class in my life, and I don’t squat all the way down to read putts because I’ve worn such a “groove” out of my meniscus (my own diagnosis) that both knees very audibly pop with too much bend in them. So I’m a little worried about taking anything other than the most beginner of classes.

For sure go Beginner and even then I’d look for the “Slow Flow” ones after that. I’m also not a Yoga person and the first “regular” one I took they moved through the positions so fast I literally couldn’t keep up.

The other thing I’d suggest is … there are a TON of stretching classes that for me are much better than Yoga. I can focus the stretches on where I’m sore or tight and not worry about whether I’m doing some random position right or whatnot. Yoga is great for those it is great for, but it’s not my jam. Stretching, on the other hand, is good for everyone.

The hamstring flow isn’t really any traditional yoga flows. Mostly a lot of stretches that really loosen up your legs. It’s a lifesaver. I also do one of the Ben Alldis full body stretches and it’s really great.

Finally got my Peloton. Order October 30th arrived January 16th with 4 reschedules in between. That beside I love the thing. 5 rides in and I think it is gonna help me with my fitness goals so much. The leaderboard drives me.

I did 10min of stretching and 10min of beginner yoga flow this afternoon instead of a beginner ride and I wish I would have done 20min of each. thanks for the suggestions, I don’t think it’ll be my last time utilizing those classes.

As a “IRL” friend of @marklemcd, imagine my surprise when I saw that he had nominated Jess King, of all instructors, for the ride of the week. Mark and I have talked a lot about Peloton, and what instructors we enjoy and which we don’t. Both of us had the same visceral reaction to Jess King - that she was certainly someone’s cup of tea, but not ours.

And, at least in my opinion, she was pushing BOTH axes on the (admittedly misogynist) Crazy Hot Matrix:

I start my ride, thinking of our conversations - maybe she’ll treat this a bit more traditionally.

It probably says more about me than her, but I immediately think she looks like a bad porn version of Pebble Flintstone. (And no, there’s no GOOD version of this, if you’re wondering.)

This becomes hard to shake. Still, the music isn’t all bad. My experience with her before though is that she - at the hardest points of the ride - stops riding altogether and dances instead.

“She doesn’t really stop riding and start dancing - it’s more like a PowerZone ride,” he said.

Oh, cool.

She begins talking about breathing through your underarms.

“As if you have gills! It really works!” she shrieks. I begin appreciating how hard it must be to ride while actively dosed on copious tabs of acid.

At some point she stops, points to the sky and says something about surrendering to the universal something something and I try not to black out.

Hey! Tom Sawyer by Rush is on. Who doesn’t love this song? Sure, she stops to drum as if she’s either @MerchCzar or Neil Peart, but who can blame her? Pebbles loves to bang the drums.

She’s back up out of the saddle, screeching something. I notice that I’m not quite on pace to PR but set my sights on 400 watts.

And…we’re done here. Hit my number on the head, and wonder how much I could have pushed it were I being coached by a sane citizen of Earth.

The first time I saw this happen (Robin Arzon) it was a bit irritating, particularly on a 15min beginner ride. I understand that the instructors can’t do the same thing as the participants but it still bothered me. In the 10 rides I’ve done with Emma I’ve only seen her do it once for like a 10 count. I think she keeps a little lower cadence than she’s asking, but it’s easy to see that she does adjust resistance up/down and generally keeps up.
