I’ve never forgotten something @Soly shared on an early NLU pod. Believe it was attributed to a mini or KF Tour player.
Soly was talking about consistency and the guy asked how much he practiced/played. The answer was something like twice a week.
Pro’s response: I play and practice 8 hours everyday and I’m not always consistent. Why would you expect to get it from twice a week. It’s a good dose of perspective and setting expectations.
If anyone skipped NLU podcast episode 874 - Getting Better at Golf with Nico Darras, I highly recommend it. He has a couple of quotes in there to this effect.
“You don’t work hard enough at golf to deserve success on the course”
And that was couched in language about giving yourself grace because you have relationships and a job and social obligations and all of this other stuff going on, so it’d be insane to put the effort forth needed to actually earn the right to get mad on the course.
Padraig Harrington had a very similar rant/statement in a video he did with Peter Finch. For some reason Peter was playing him straight up and was loosing. He had a couple hole stretch that for all intents and purposes ended the match. During this he got some serious hang dog going and Padraig stopped him coming off the green and asked him “what makes you think you’re good enough to play well with this kind of attitude?”
That has really stuck with me throughout the year and has been something I go back to when I get bitchy/hit a bad shot. It’s been a tough year for me on the course from injuries and getting soft capped, so it’s helped a lot to recenter after some blow up holes.
Reviving this thread to talk about the “film room” video that @sundaybag and @KVV did on Kevin’s self talk during the LU Club Championship. Nice job on the video! I really enjoyed it.
As someone who has previously professed in this thread that I have a similar affliction, the thing that jumped out to me was KVV starting the round by saying he had zero expectations. But it was clear from his self talk that he did have some expectations. And I think that’s really a big part of why I get frustrated. I know I can hit a shot solidly because I’ve done it before. But I fail to acknowledge how rarely I hit it as solidly as I want to.
KVV - have you had any follow on thoughts about this experience? Curious if you’ve implemented any strategies to reduce the bad self talk.
Finally got caught up and finished both parts during some slow work days this week. What an awesome idea and content! Kudos to the team for the amount of time it took to put together - I truly hope it becomes an annual competition.
I love that it was at Erin Hills, a course where NLU previously had an event and some of us are familiar with. Hope future venues are also at places that are familiar in some way - whether from NLU events or other content.
As far as the Net/Gross debates, I have no problem with this being the one gross competition. But i do think different tees should be in play based on tiers of HCP - not only for Casey but also KVV and perhaps Randy. Guessing results may still be very similar, but might eliminate some of those double-digit numbers and could be a way to group individuals without giving strokes.
The production was top notch. Great camera work, and stellar commentary. Truly felt like a network production, but even better and with just enough NLU winks.
Also, Erin Hills showed out. Loved some of these golden hour shots at the end:
And finally, congrats to @sundaybag as a worthy champion. And while I understand the sponsor tie in with the Yeti bucket, I can’t deny I was hoping for a giant trophy with a wayward drive golfer on top and plaques for each year’s winner to engrave their name, Gary Player style.
