It’s hyperbole. With a smiley at the end.
Perfect example, and I’m sorry if there are fans of this podcast, but my favorite murder was targeted as chicks talking about true crime, and it just didn’t stick the landing for me. Make it organic. I love when Jessica Mendoza is on espn baseball, she has great insights, and hell she could have an even bigger role. But it’s pretty organic and the way she’ll check Arod was hilarious
Mendoza to sunday night baseball is a great example, shes been a tremendous add the booth. Wondering when Mina Kimes is going to get a shot at a bigger role too.
Whoa whoa whoa, let’s not get hasty on Mina Kimes. I need her to continue to be available for Bachelor Party and Rewatchables.
I cant remember the exact reason why but a coworker recommended this pod to me and I don’t think I hit eject faster on one than this. Flow was so odd (may have been an early episode thing)
My wife, her best friend, and her sister all love this podcast. Which sort of goes to what I was saying earlier. Five white males are going to have more of an impact on other white male’s viewing habits than a women. Not discounting a women’s voice in any way. I think those are still critically important to the discussion.
Exactly the same with me. It was forced. And that’s where I think expanding to the 5 white dudes on NLU would be welcome, because they already have a natural flow so it would be less pressure and they could be themselves
Topically, Crime Junkie (outside of their plagiarism accusations) and Criminal are homeruns in this genre
I enjoy true crime garage. They’re worth listening to. They don’t romanticize it like sword and scale does
I think we could probably all agree there is more than enough podcast space for a women only golf pod and a co-ed pod
I’m jumping down because I have meetings to get to today but super excited to dive into this conversation…
One thing to keep in mind is that for women there are barriers to entry as both a fan and a participant. I’m not exaggerating when I say that NLU/Refuge is honestly the first time I really feel like I’ve been able to participate in a sports fandom as a woman and be welcomed and not “marginalized” in any way. I’d gotten very accustomed to the “oh, you say you’re a fan of baseball, ok who was the catcher for the Braves in the 95 World Series”, jumping into a golf website to be welcomed by an article of “You won’t believe the Instagram photos of Matt Jones girlfriend!!!” or being the only female voice in a male dominated space. It can be exhausting.
As for participating in sports. Growing up to play hard ball, I had to play on the boys team (and of course I wasn’t very good…), golf clubs are harder to buy, there’s less opportunities to “join your peers” in participating in sports. Not long ago I had a marshal remind the group of women I was playing with that we needed to play fast as we were walking down the first fairway. Etc etc we’ve had this conversation before…
So these barriers to entry lead to less female participation in sports, lower viewership etc. All leading to this mindset of the “average sports fan is a good old boy who just wants to crack open a Coors and watch men be men on ESPN.” But taking into consideration that some of the above barriers I pointed out are disappearing and I’m guessing that if you were to ask a 16 year old girl, she would probably would have different things to say than me someone 20 years her senior about participating in sports while growing up. We’re going to see more and more women participating in sports (and are seeing that) and from that we’re going to see more and more women watching sports and more and more women as the participants in those sports we’re watching. etc etc That chicken and the egg/circular reasoning goes in both directions.
What’s a common refrain we hear in respect to LPGA? “I never watched much LPGA but then I happened to tune in and found myself really enjoying it.” As that happened to tune in gets easier and easier I will think we will see golf viewers (both male and female start to enjoy it more and more).
I find myself saying “I didn’t even know there was a major this weekend!” Unless I happen to be caught up on my fav golf pods. Espn and the like aren’t doing the sport any favors.
I’m so ashamed to say my first thought was “Terry Pendleton?”
The Easter Egg with that is that every hetero female sports fan knows full well it’s Javy Lopez!
To Sarah’s point: my high school didn’t (still doesn’t) have a women’s golf team so I played on the boys team and was the first girl to ever do so.
I’ve literally walked in to a pro shop before and asked if I could take a cart out and the response was “have you ever been on a golf course before” and this was like 2 years ago.
Exactly. After a split second I thought “he was a third baseman you moron”, followed immediately by “who was the '95 Braves catcher”?
Who could forget that dreamboat Javy Lopez?
Sad to say my high school had a girl’s team but there was only 1 player and it was Justine Karain.
what a name drop!
Mina’s too good at too many things. The only solution is to never allow her to sleep so she can appear on various content properties and write 24/7.
As long as we get Mallory Rubin on the Bachelor Party pod I’m happy
