Mike Whan Podcast(s)

The USGA, with the whining the men have done over the past few years, are likely in no position to take away $2.5M.

The U.S. Open makes money. I think it’s the only USGA championship that does, and it makes a lot of it. The women’s open currently loses money.

But you think it’ll happen in 20 years. Do you think that occurs with the current status quo or do things need to change to meet your goal as well

Yeah, this is my thought. You’re asking a lot of questions wanting people to do the work for you. Why don’t you show us what you find?

If they host events concurrently. Maybe they have to shrink the field to accommodate, easy to shave off purse sizes when you have to pay less people

What an incredible day it would be for the world when the pampered fucks of men’s golf complain that their 8 digit purse size goes down to support the equivalent women’s championship. I relish the opportunity for the first male player dumb enough to open his mouth about that.

They complained about playing in the Ryder Cup, remember? That many might see them as “pampered fucks” doesn’t mean they wouldn’t do it.

You don’t think that’s a non-starter?

IMO the only way you have concurrent events is like the US Am: two courses (for at least rounds 1 and 2). But for the national Open, they’d better be two really good courses. And I’m not sure you have many sites that can do that.

Let not forget this. It’s very possible that when you stack the events like this you actually get a larger television audience than the two events run independently. So while you may have some negative pressure on the men’s purse at first, that may not always be the case. It’s very possible that the total aggregate purse grows in subsequent years.

Another point- if the Asian countries gamble like crazy, and those countries also love women’s golf, then that would be an objective economic case for the men benefiting from the joint tournaments.

Or like someone mentioned earlier, start the event Tuesday and then combine the fields for the weekend, there are lots of options. Who knows what anyone chooses or does. Not sure what a super would say though

Death, taxes and @iacas getting bodied in the refuge. Subjective topics are not your forte, my gui.

@Tron and @Randy, if coverage is such an issue, will NLU commit to covering the women as much as the men in 2021?

Again, y’all do a better job here than almost anyone else, and maybe more than anyone else not dedicated to the women’s game, but your coverage gives more air time to the men as well.

Can you say it one more time just so everyone knows you disagree with Mike Whan?

Yep. I don’t think we’ll get there within five years. And technically, Whan didn’t put a timeline on it, either.

Shane Bacon and Damon Hack are discussing this right now on golf channel. Tune in

Edit: they don’t agree with you either @iacas

Guess we’ll all find out in five years.

Just to summarize what I found while researching things today (not to be a broken record, but because it honestly wasn’t what I expected and I’m a little blown away by it). We have actual ratings numbers that show that women draw more viewers than men in tennis and soccer. We also have actual ratings numbers that show that when given a chance on “real” stations, women sports ratings will increase at a time when every men’s sport is seeing a decrease. And the highest ratings for the Women’s US Open was when they got almost equal promotion in 2014. Add to that the purse sizes increasing at a much higher rate for the men than the women. Change is coming and it’s going to be soon. Anyone who doesn’t think so is willingly putting their head in the sand or simply thinks men are better than women.

That’s the goal, Chief. Natural starting point is with our discretionary time, attention, and resources (ie. not sponsor-related projects). Hoping to push sponsors into more balance in coming years. Let us know how we do!

Edit: A couple recent, relevant examples: 1) USWO coverage last month. You can expect much more dedicated attention around majors, and more discussion week-to-week. That was a trip nobody paid us to make, and coincidentally, was as much fun as @Tron and I had all year. 2) Our 2021 Young Hitters budget actually skews more towards women than men (more fun stuff to come here).
