Thoroughly enjoyed the podcast! Well done @KVV, looking forward to the next one
Good stuff @KVV !!
Great content and perfect length. Canât wait to hear more like this in the future!
@KVV is absolutely killing it with the boys in Australia. The recap pods, twitter, Gary Player pod. This two week stretch has taken NLU to the next level in my eyes
Wait, is that known now? I figured they werenât doing Australia again to avoid repeating (unless they figured they could do it better). I thought the clues were leading towards Argentina/Brazil.
Yessir. theyâve been putting up some pics on IG. I thought the same RE: South America
Donât know that it would be a great time to be in Argentina
An awesome pod. Iâd love more of these deep dive narrative pods into interesting people and golf events.
A couple off the top of my head:
- Moe Norman
- Anthony Kim (relevant right now?)
- 2014 Ryder cup and aftermath
- Victor Dubuisson
- Collin Montgomery in America
- Curtis Stranges US Opens
Short list Iâve got off of the top of my head Iâm sure there are so many more worth exploring
Absolutely excellent pod @KVV!
I was a big fan of the deep dive pods during COVID and love the extra attention to detail put into this episode.
He was mentioned a few times in the Player story, but Iâd like to learn more about Lee Elder. Is a deep dive on him a possibility?
Great pod @KVV and I know itâs superficial but youâve got a great voice for podcast storytelling. Dulcet tones, Damon!
Every time I hear a story of Garyâs workout regimen I imagine him as Martin Shortâs Uncle Jack from Arrested Development and his âbirthday feats of strengthâ
That would be a ridiculously short one. As large as the myth (and his belt buckles) used to be⌠he wasnât around long and didnât do that much.
True. Iâd like a little backstory on where he came from and what happened leading into his pro career. In my mind he appeared, won a few event and disappeared. Might be remembering incorrectly though.
What I really am curious about is more of whatâs happened since he retired and that one would be even shorter - especially without AK participating.
I really enjoyed this. I hope this is the first of many more episodes to come in this style. Reminded me of the Fried Egg Stories that Garrett does, which I also really enjoy.
I am sorry to be the dissenting voice but it really pi$$es me off that Player is given any time in the spotlight. He was a card carrying racist and highly vocal supporter of apartheid.
To dismiss his revisionist view on his role in history or to try and paint a picture of him as being a supporter of minority rights because of his later friendship with Elder, gives him too much credit.
Player was not just a supporter of apartheid, he profited from it. He regularly acted as an agent of the Committee for Fairness in Sport, which was a government funded agency to push back against the boycotting of South African sport. For Player to claim he had the wool pulled over his eyes is a poor justification of his actions.
This was sports washing of the first degree and to celebrate Player is beneath NLU.
I donât know that it really âcelebratedâ Gary Player.
In my view, it merely laid things out.
I think it is far more damning to let someone hang themselves with their own words than to make grandiose statements condemning them. Gary Player wrote an entire chapter in his own autobiography about how apartheid was good. He wasnât misquoted, he wrote the words himself.
And, it is also true that Lee Elder loved him and considered him a friend and said he didnât have a racist bone in his body.
People are rarely as cartoonishly evil or as pure we want them to be. Good journalism recognizes nuances in the human spirit, IMO. Gary is some who did both harm in his life, and someone who did a lot of good. I feel comfortable that the podcast gets to the gist of that. He is both an absurd, insecure man, and also a very driven and fascinating figure. Many people, particularly young one, donât understand his entire story and I feel we did not celebrate him as much as we did educate people on him.
That doesnât mean anything. Athletes get misquoted in their own books all the time.

So glad we got the impression at the end. @KVV giving the people what they want, what they need
Last week I decided to listen to an audiobook of the original Dickens Christmas Carol. It was narrated by Tim Curry from back in 2009. Turns out Tim Curry at 1.5 speed sounds just like @KVV doing Gary Player at 1.5 speed.
I donât know what to do with the information or where to put it but I can guarantee no one in my physical life would know what I was talking about or care, so Iâm putting it here for posterity.
Player was a great golfer and competitor but a deeply flawed man.
