Finally got around to listening to this pod. Joe was throwing 98 mph the whole time, absolutely electric. I hadn’t known who he was until this point and now it makes sense why his takes were so contrarian in the early 2010s.
I switched swing coaches in 2011 and he was teaching what Joe was basically saying, that swing path dictated ball flight and club face at impact dictated where the ball started, not the other way around. I told this epiphany to a former head pro and he vehemently denied this. Can’t imagine the push back that Joe received during that time period.
So I saw Joe Mayo’s stuff on Instagram at some point late 2024 or early 2025 and thought “that’s weird why not use the bounce?”
For what ever reason, possibly as a result of a positive short game lesson in Edinburgh, I started giving his method a go in recent months and I feel much happier about shorter chips and the 50 yard-range shots.
