Chicagoland Matchplay Tournament 2023 - 2CGC Team Qualifier

I want to give your newborn child the assist, who’s efforts in keeping you from playing golf this summer, and probably sleeping, definitely were major influences in making a very solid game sufficiently rusty.
I go forward in their honor.

With the 2023 match play well underway, I figure it’s time to update everyone on the 2022 championship match between @Ballgame and myself, contested this past Sunday at Sunset Valley.

I think it’s safe to say that neither of us played particularly well, exaggerated by the 20+ mph winds that seemed to switch directions every 15 minutes. I jumped out to a 4 up lead through 12 and was 3 up with three holes remaining. You can see where this is going. After we both lipped out putts on 16 (mine was for a 3&2 win), @Ballgame handily won the 17th and 18th and beat me in a blind chip-off. His lovely wife officiated the chip-off, and the starting position was selected by our non-Refuge playing partner.

It was without a doubt the weirdest round of golf I have ever played. I hit multiple balls off hazard rocks which bounded to safety, we had multiple lost balls in leaves, and I hit a ball onto the clubhouse roof on 9. (Yes, you read that correctly. I caught a flier lie and had no idea what the wind was doing, causing me to fly the green, hit the path, and bound onto the roof. Truly a tour de force.)

Congratulations to your 2022 champion @Ballgame!

@ballgame remains undefeated on blind chip offs at Sunset Valley. Truly the GOAT.

@Ballgame is truly the 2C player of the year based on his finishes in the match play and Breakfast Ball. Great job, man!

@delirioustim you still good with MP next Saturday? I’ll grab a foursome tomorrow morning when they get released. I’m hoping for something around 9am, I need to be home by mid-afternoon.

Shoot, I can’t do next weekend because of exams. I’ll shoot you a DM so we can schedule.

Had an excellent day out at Cog Hill Ravines with @krzeczowskimatt and his friend Bob. I managed to hold Matt off on the back 9 to prevail 2&1.

I think I maybe had 2 or 3 sniffs at birdie all day, but driver was working and only got myself into big trouble on 12, where I was in my pocket after two very questionable swings.

Most importantly, Matt and Bob are a great time on a golf course and we need to get them at more Refuge events. It was something watching Bob hit the shit out of the ball all day.

Also we saw this bad ass (I think?) red-tail hawk. It DGAF.

Can you play in the 9:10 at Schaumburg next Saturday with myself, @Setwilli, and @Pinehurts?

That would be perfect. Rest of the fam is headed downtown to run the Hot Chocolate 5K.

Hopefully there’s still the spot left online!

Do @joepark and @tmstrods actually exist? Many people are asking.

I’ve played golf with both of them. Can confirm. Do they exist at the same golf course at the same time? :man_shrugging:

Full transparency the death panel is leaning on giving the match to @tmstrods on count of playing with Refugees more often and being active in the thread.

Death panel is convening to forfeit that match for @joepark. You will play @tmstrods in the next round.

Joe hasn’t posted in over a year and his last “seen” date is over a month ago. Sorry dude, but you need to be active in the thread to get spots in things like match play or other events.

Can we duck race it instead? Unless @tmstrods has conversed with the judge, jury and executioner prior.

I guess we need to put the pitch forks away. Ethan has it under control.

@Scott_M and I played our nine hole match at River Bend today. I got off to a good start with long putts on 1 and 2 for a win and a halve, but he evened the match in 3 and took the lead on five. Two drives that finished much better than they should have on six led to another halve. I used my single stroke on 7 to even it up, but a brilliant second shot on eight led to a par for Scott and a one hole lead that he protected on the ninth.

Life lesson: bring the right glasses. I have bright light and lower light prescription sunglasses for golf, but when the light got really low, my normal progressive lenses were not great.

Good luck to Scott in the next round.
