Adaptive Club Fitting @PING Proving Grounds for Lee Madden

Dear Friends, Supporters and most importantly fellow Sickos

I am thrilled to share a remarkable story about @theLeemur a young man I met at a @PalmettoGolfSociety event. Lee, who is an active participant in both the online NLU community and the local group chats, was attending his first event. And boy did he make a first impression!

Lee headshot 2

He comes from a golfing family and was introduced to the game by his dad, who shares the same genetic condition. Growing up as a child with a disability, he learned to adapt and overcome challenges. This hard work and determination ultimately led to his personal mantra from the inspiring motto: “Attitude is a choice.” With the support from his father and grandfathers, he developed a swing that worked for him using standard clubs. He has a competitive spirit, honed through years of playing soccer, which drives his passion and addiction to golf. It will be exciting to see how custom-fitted clubs will enhance his overall comfort and continue to grow his love for the game. I know for a fact that he is incredibly excited about this opportunity and appreciates all those involved.

An Unforgettable Day

A month before the event, Lee reached out with a simple message: “Just wanted to give you a heads up. I’m disabled, but I promise I’m not slow. Lol.” His emphasis on the pace of play struck a chord and knew he was one of us!

The event was perfect, don’t ask about the pace of play, it wasn’t us! 20 PGS sickos gathered to play a 12-hole par-three course. The weather was amazing, we played under the lights, and there were some incredible golf shots. Getting to know Lee as we walked the course following the championship match was my highlight though.

The Need for Adaptive Equipment

Lee plays golf with a standard set of clubs which are ill-fitting for his needs. It became clear that he would benefit significantly from an adaptive set of clubs. While researching adaptive golf, I discovered Carolina Adaptive Golf, an organization dedicated to using golf as therapy for veterans, adults, and children with unique abilities.

Brandon and Tony from Carolina Adaptive Golf were incredibly supportive. Tony, a bilateral amputee, recommended PING for adaptive golf fittings. Learning more about Carolina Adaptive Golf’s impact on the community, I knew we had found a special place to support Lee.

Our Mission

In early August, Lee will be flying to Arizona to work with PING’s Master Adaptive Fitter, Bryan Rourke, at PING’s Proving Grounds. To support Lee’s experience, his father, Brandon from Carolina Adaptive Golf and I will be joining him. PING generously provides these adaptive golf fittings for free, but we need to fund the custom-built clubs.

Bryan is a friend of a close friend (who also works at PING). Have met him a handful of times. He is a fantastic person and Lee will be in great hands. Very excited to hear about his experience.

Bryan has been great to work with! His family just grew and still made sure we kept moving this forward while he’s been on paternity leave.

I knew his wife was expecting but missed the birth. Awesome that he’s been great to work with. I’ll have to reach out to him too.

I truly cannot express how much these past few weeks have showed me how compassionate and how thoughtful people can be. From @dclthomas making the decision to find a way to help me, to Carolina Adaptive Golf immediately saying they can help and springing into action. This was all done without me having any knowledge until Dustin told me to give him a call about 3 weeks ago. I speechless then and I truly still am.

To anyone that donates, thank you so much for the support. Through this community that NLU has created, I hope I get a chance to meet every one of you. I encourage everyone to find an adaptive golf organization near you and to #getinvolved. You have no idea how easy it can be to help out until you do help out.

Probably the coolest part of this that didn’t make it to the final cut, mostly because I’m terrible at writing, is that literally the day before I reached out to @theLeemur to talk to him about this opportunity he had actually submitted the online form for Carolina Adaptive Golf to volunteer!

When I heard this, I knew my gut was right, that Lee is exactly who makes this community so special and why none of us hesitate to step up and spread the love!

I can’t wait to get my ass kicked by you at the Par 3 tournament next year.

Also, I can’t wait to do a “What’s in the bag” post with you in a couple of months!

It’ll be the first WITB post featuring 5ft long clubs! If it takes until next years par 3 tournament for us to play, we’re doing something very wrong

Now let’s keep those funds coming in!

Carolina Adaptive Golf is an amazing organization and will use every last dollar to continue their fantastic journey. If you haven’t already, check out the rest of their site, their calendar of events and other activities they support.

Thank you to everyone that donated or shared. I put this in our PGS roosts slack, but I didn’t expect this much in a week. Much less 6 hours.

@theLeemur I just want to encourage you to set your expectations so high. Here is why.

I am a teacher and high school golf coach out in California. I get to play behind the match that is happening with the coach from the opposite team when we play. One of the teams in our league got a new coach this past season, who I had never met before. He showed up, and he had arms that looked like yours (I am not saying that he has the same handicap as you, just that his arms/hands resembled yours from the picture on your donate page.)

We exchange introductions, and do what we need to do to get our teams match going. I then ask the obvious question about his arms, and how he got into golf, etc. he tells me his story, and that PING has outfitted him with special clubs that allow him to compete in the adaptive golf circuit. He tells me about going out to Arizona and the whole deal. Sounds awesome, but it’s time for us to get going. I let him know that I was going to play behind the boys, and he was welcome to join me if he would like. And I was blown away.

He pulls out these extremely long clubs, with huge paddles on the end as grips that he puts under is armpit. He addresses the ball, pulls the club back in his own unique way, and pipes the ball down the fairway. If you were only looking at ball flight, you would have thought it was one of the kids on our golf teams. He goes on to shoot 40 (we only play 9 holes) from the back tees, and my jaw was on the floor the entire time.

I only share this story with you to encourage you with something that you may already know. That this opportunity is amazing, and the golf world is right in front of you. I don’t have personal experience with the process except seeing what comes out of it. And what I saw was truly amazing. You have a supporter in me and excited to follow along on the journey.

Thank you my man! We’re assuming that those paddles are what I will be fit into, and if that’s the case then I’ll be thrilled. They were designed by this guy. He took them to PING for their help in improving them and now PING uses them for many adaptive players. I’m very excited to see how my game changes with this fitting

Lee, I work for the PGA TOUR Superstore in our corporate office and we just had a bunch of our best club fitters in for adaptive fitting training recently so we can start offering that service.

Please don’t hesitate to reach out for my contact info if you need any additional fitting or equipment and I’m sure we’d be happy to help!
