A thread for the Texas folks

Having to spend a weekend in Midlothian here in a few weeks and looking at where to play. Anyone got reccomendations?

Mansfield National. Played it back in May and was a fun track and in good shape. Maybe 15-20 mins from Midlothian.

Moving to Austin at the end of September. Just graduated in May from Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and took a position in north Austin with a well-known financial services firm. Parents live there, so have played a few courses around there (mostly north ATX like Teravista, Avery Ranch, Forest Creek, Lago Vista Muni) but hoping to meet and play with some Austin refugees some time in the future. Also need to play the notorious Lions Muni and the Clay/Kizer courses for the first time.

That said, I was kind of spoiled down here with a relatively cheap club membership right up the road. Anybody know of any semi-private clubs or even public courses that offer membership?

Falconhead, Avery and Terra Vista Gad a deal this summer for $300 a month w/ no initiation if you’re living near any of them

If you’re bored and have the time, trip to Glen Rose and play all 36 there is a pretty good day.

Heard about this and definitely going to look into it. Saving on an initiation fee could mean I’m in the market for a walker trolley!

Just got an email they are on a waitlist, so probably should act quickly. All memberships are full as of yesterday.

Star Ranch has their “Players Club” membership that’s decent. $69/month, unlimited range, practice facilities, and discounted tee times after 2pm in the summer and 1pm in the winter. Good greens, wide open fairways, not the toughest test, but a consistently good course

Got a 10:20 tee time Tuesday at the quarry in San Antonio. Just made It for one person so there are three spots still open on the website if anyone is interested.

Thanks for all the suggestions way earlier in the thread.

Finally got up to visit my cousin and we played Meadowbrook in Arlington Sunday morning. What a great little course! He hasn’t played in 5 years and playing that course made him want to pick up golf again. And it turns out, that’s the course his dad learned to play golf at. So I think it went pretty well for him.

Also has a cool view walking down #8

Great little course for what it is! I need to get back out there here soon! Glad you both had a great time.

Officially a Dallas resident as of last Thursday and played my first local round at Tenison (Highlands) on Sunday. Had a fun time and it’s closest to me so will probably end up being the most played but after reading everyone’s comments in here I booked a tee time for this Saturday at Stevens Park. Really excited to give it a go. Any tips for a lefty that tends to struggle with the big left miss off the tee?

Alright I’m back hoping to get some more suggestions.

My bachelor party is coming up October 9-11th in Wimberly and I’d like to play golf the morning of Saturday the 10th. Now, here’s the rub of the green, there’s 9 of us and only 5-6 of us play golf with any regularity. The other 3 have literally never picked up a club.

I was hoping to drive to the Pitch n Putt in Austin, but it looks like they’re closed for renovations, and I called the Willie Nelson Cut n Putt course but they said they’ll be closed until they get approval from the CDC (seems strange given almost all the other courses are open).

I’m hoping to find some place nearby where we can play and not have to worry that a few people are going to be really bad. A Par 3 course would be amazing but so far I’m not having any luck.

Just beware of some “local’s” that hangout off 7 and 8 and claim your big left miss hit their car

Do not ever go to the Spicewood Rock Garden (aka Willie’s Cut N’ Putt). Hancock Park would likely be your next best option as it’s a shorter 9 holer and won’t take more than 1.5 hrs to play.

San Pedro in San Antonio? You said you are staying in Wimberley but it’s not too much difference drive time wise between going north to Austin or south to SA.

I stayed out in Wimberly back in May with a few friend and we played a round with at The Club at Rebecca Creek (15 mins from Wimberly town). Contrary to its fancy sounding name the course was just giant farm with 18 golf holes. Super unpretentious vibe, no sand traps on the entire course, easy, and fairly open (sometimes too open). I can imagine a few tee times towards the end of the afternoon leading into sundown might be extremely nice for the group without having to worry about people playing behind you guys.

One section of the course is particularly hilarious and I would even deem it “The Most Dangerous Hole in Texas”. The driving range has no net and any right miss from the range literally lands on 10 Fairway. It’s truly wild. A few other holes are all along 10 fairway in a giant ass field. Always keep your head on a swivel until you get through the field and into some wooded areas.

All in all its a course I’ll probably never play again, and won’t write home about, but it MIGHT just be what you guys are looking for. Good fun and like 5,000 beers and laughs.

Here’s a view of “the field” with the range next to 10 fairway. They have the tiniest little wall blocking the range bays lmao

That looks perfect!

I’ll call them tomorrow and see when it would be best for us to come through, I don’t want to hold people up behind us.

I can not get on board with this take. Willie’s is legendary. #iykyk

I hit it up a couple of times a year…PLUS we hold our staff championship there.
