At the Texas Cup last year, the guy riding in the marshall’s cart came and hung out with us as we were watching some of the later groups finish up on Saturday afternoon. He goes “hey if ya’ll end up walking back out on the course later, start on 1. Ya’ll keep your carts if you want, just have 'em back by dark.”
And that’s how we ended up playing a three-club bonus nine holes as a seventeen-some.
That’s a big part of why they’re so great out there.
We parked the carts after a second round a couple years ago and the head greens keeper came looking for them well past dark. We were grilling out and didn’t even think to take them back. He wound up drinking a couple beers and taking a hamburger and hot dog. He didn’t care at all that we had them.
One of the bartenders during the buc-ee’s cup last year was an Aggie gal that gave me probably 3 large crown and sprites on the house. Their kitchen/bar staff are good people.
Yeah, the same guy has been working the bar/restaurant, often by himself, for several years. I once played a solo round there in February that finished in sleet, and he kept the place open for me when no one else was on the property until I was warm enough to venture out.
Relatedly, I may try to swing a cold weather round there on Sunday around noon on my way back to Dallas from east TX - anyone interested in joining me?
Employees Group hang Vibes Sandy soil and pine trees in Texas Logo - look few people would have shit on it but then she called it the best in the word (speaking of shit, that butt crack) Tree management Proshop merch Social media Texas Cup Host - like SA/ATX, Pine Dunes is undefeated
I’d agree with all this. The golf is fantastic, I rolled into the pro shop after my solo round first playing it back in September and the guy let me loop it again no charge. The non-ownership guys there are great.
Obviously my experience is a lot more soured than most people’s would be, I really wanted to help that place out and make it merch that’s worth the drive alone. Can’t tell you how much stuff I’ve bought playing at Sweetens purely because it’s the best quality stuff with a wildly diverse selection constantly rotating, SCGC could write a book on pro shop stewardship.
I’d love to hear what numbers they do in merchandise sales that “I can’t imagine”.
At risk of sounding like a grungy 70s surfer, while I’d love for Pine Dunes to grow and become a top tier course/experience on all fronts, it does keep it more affordable and “locals only”
I think our critiques are in line with that. We don’t want these fancy condos and heli pads. We want better merch, brush trimming/more natural bunkers, and maybe an offset smoker for the bar/restaurant. I’m fine with the pre-fab and rundown accommodations.
I’m certain there’s a little bit of the “everyone else is lame but you guys are cool” waitress game going on, but those two ladies that worked the bar last year were hilarious and awesome to hang out with.
