I could listen to these daily. @KVV 's Gary Player never gets old.
3 hours didnt even seem too long!
Apologies for the lengthy post. This one brought back some fond memories. Thanks to @Soly for the Tom McKnight shoutout. He finished the 1999 Masters T-44, two shots behind low amateur Sergio Garcia.
Tom McKnight was my first boss. I was a high school kid working for one of the businesses he owned. He gave me a set of old Ping Zingâs when I was leaving for the military. His petroleum distribution business was a series of convenience stores called âOn The Wayâ across Virginia and North Carolina. He also distributed heating oil to homes across southwest Virginia. His dad was mayor of Galax, Virginia for about 15 years back in the 70âs and 80âs. My wife grew up next door to the McKnightâs. She babysat their three kids as a teenager and early into her college years.
Tom played golf and basketball at the University of Virginia. He broke his arm playing basketball at some point during his college years. It healed back abnormally so he had to construct a golf swing around a left arm that wouldnât fully straighten. He was inducted into the Virginia State Golf Association Hall of Fame a few years ago. He is currently a volunteer assistant for the UVA menâs and womenâs golf teams.
Tom once told me he practiced for the Masters by trying to leave himself â13 fence posts out from the front of the 2nd green at Galax Country Club on every green at Augusta except the par 3âs.â He said, âplenty of people played Galax imagining they were playing Augusta. I have to be the only person to every play Augusta imagining they were playing #2 at Galax.â
Tom and Vita are special people!!!
Great work @KVV and @Soly. As an Australian golf tragic of the 90s I have fond and profound memories of Normanâs '99 Masters. On the matter of headwear, the Shark was hatless, (I repeat hatless - shout out Chief Wiggum) in the two majors he won, and certainly broadbrimmed-less in the his other best efforts (including the 99 Masters; the 08 Open; anything in the 1980s). There is a story that went around in the 1980s that when the Shark got his Akubra sponsorship a couple of Aussie pros in the locker room snickered and said âHeâll never win a major in that ⌠.â Never a truer word spoken.
PS @KVV still waiting for your thoughts on the The Product.
Love the deep dives.
Glad that DL3 got some love for executing the Tiger shot before Tiger (Tigerâs is still sick and iconic).
Also, the Norman bogey on 12 that Saturday was one of the greatest bogeys I have ever seen. Most guys would be shook after not finding his ball. Guy walks back to the tee and has the stones to hit a great shot and follows it up with the putt.
Possibly my favorite series going, one of the simple joys in life is seeing that there is a new pod out early in the week. As a Sporcle frequenter, you can assure I was pounding on my steering wheel screaming âJOHN DALY!!â
I loved hearing about how Tiger momentarily wilted when Sergio looked back at him after making a birdie putt. Itâs a perfect example of how Tiger wasnât exactly pushed during his career, and makes you wonder what would have happened if he had more/any contemporaries that rose to the occasion before YE Yang.
1999 might be my most vivid memory of major watching, so I was really looking forward to this year.
I need to go back and find clips of rounds 1-3 to see some of the examples of the carnage.
Iâve watched the Peter Alliss commentary of Van de Velde so many times, I almost have it memorized. Quite possibly one of the finest moments in all of sports broadcasting (I said what I said).
I will go to my grave believing that Van de Veldeâs triple bogey putt is the greatest putt struck in major championship history and I will take no questions.
looking forward to diving inâŚ
loved how this guy got murdered in the comments
I think this is an interesting fact about Tom McKnightâs family as well. All three of his children were D1 college athletes. Son Tee played golf at UVA. Daughter Tara was a two-time team captain for the UVA Womenâs basketball team. Son Jay played golf at Furman.
âStop doing accentsâ is not something I thought I would ever see. They are great.
Maybe this dude meant to tweet at Soly but tagged KVV by accident?
Iâm fascinated (prompted by the conversation about Normans hat) to investigate the possibility of Shots Gained Drip. We all know that if you look good, you feel good, you play good but has anyone investigated its affect on major championships?
I immediately thought of Bernhard of course:
This would be a good idea for the Bracket threadâŚbest outfit worn by a major champion during the final round.
My hypothesis is that the fewer majors youâve won, the greater the effect
Yeah, Tigerâs black and red doesnât look great (hell, most of Nikeâs shit looks awful), and you can only do so much with black and red. My mind goes to Fred Couples at the 92 Masters - now thatâs some classic drip.
Another classic! Looking forward to the early 2000s and 94! Thanks so much for continuing to do these! I feel similar nostalgia for that era that Soly expresses here and in other episodes. My parents had a tiny TV in the kitchen that would have the golf on as we had dinner. Golden memories.
Quick observation today as I was watching the movie âKinds of Kindnessâ, the great actor, Mamoudou Athie, sounds very much like Tiger to me. But I had just finished the deep dive earlier in the day so perhaps a bit of recency bias!
