D.J. and Jordan catch up with The Ringer's Alan Siegel to discuss his new book "Stupid TV, Be More Funny: How The Simpsons Changed Television - and America - Forever" as well as our personal favorite episodes, characters and the larger cultural impact the show has had over the course of its 36 seasons.
Couldn’t believe my eyes seeing the latest podcast feed with Simpsons & No Laying Up together. Great pod, always fun to hear simpsons chatter from fellow enthusiasts.
Im sure you will have said this to him already but @Randy should start with Homer & the bat to wet his appetite, when the time comes for a watch.
Pro tip: watch the original dvds with the commentary, they’re hilarious if you’re a real Simpsons nerd. Conan is on a bunch of episodes that were made during his tenure.
I wonder how much of an inspiration that old Simpson’s message board was for the Refuge.
Excited to listen to this. If you’re a huge nerd like me, and have watched the golden year episodes a million times and have exhausted the DVD commentaries, I suggest watching the YouTube channel TheRealJims.
He does insane deep dives on all things Simpsons - mysteries, episode recaps, character histories. Some (all?) of it is real nerdy, but I love it. His channel is also a good way to catch up on the insane world of modern-day Simpsons (so you don’t have to)
I suggest starting here:
It’s wild to go down a list of the best Simpsons episodes and remember how many I love. Have to go down quite a bit before I’m like meh on one.
I have a theory that the best of the Simpsons starts to shift when celebrities start playing themselves rather than a written character (outside of small cameos like Bret Harts or the Chilli Peppers) HEY MOE!!
When you wish upon a star with Baldwin & Basinger is my line in the sand for that
If I’ve never really watched - is S1E1 the place to start
They’re definitely finding their stride with the animation, story-telling, and voices for the first 2 seasons, but I wouldn’t skip them. My advice would be to just start at the beginning.
Same, @djpie – Troy McClure was the best. (As with anything Phil Hartman did).
I also get down with McBain lol
Loved this pod. @djpie and @errjordan did an awesome job, and I ordered the book while listening. Running through the top 10 episodes was a great trip down nostalgia lane.
I consider season 1-8 the Golden Age, with the show really hitting it’s stride comedically in season 3.
If watching on Disney+. Make sure the remastered aspect ratio is not active, the show is much better in the old original format especially in the early seasons when the animation is tricky haha.
- Yes the podcast has forced me into watching them again
For those that have watched the podcast, is it worth watching on YouTube or can this one be done audio only?
BYE, BOOK
