2025 US Open at Oakmont

And Bryson had found massive success in life already whereas Wyndham had put in a lot of work to get out of the trenches in recent time relative to his standout season

… and you know, the putt on the last, it was a really tricky putt. And I was very aware of where Bryson was off the tee. I knew I had to hit it really soft.
If the one back didn’t matter, I would have hit it firmer. But because I was sort of in two minds, I didn’t know whether Bryson was going to make a par or not, it was one of those ones where I had to make sure that if the putt didn’t go in, that it wasn’t going ten feet by which it easily could have.

Sounds to me like he wasn’t focused on making sure he won and was playing for at worst a tie instead.

I guess we should listen to you, considering your strong match play record and all.

That’s the beauty of this. We both read the same statement from Rory and we both still see it a different way. He was of two minds. He wasn’t committed. :man_shrugging:

I definitely see where you’re coming from and understand why you think the putt was fine though. Truly not trying to be combative here.

Yeah it would have been interesting to see what he would have done if he was in that final group. What shouldn’t be missed is he certainly saw where Byrsons drive ended up

I have even less respect for Rory’s decisionmaking and putter now!

I did love the fact that he explained the course layout playing a role in how much he was paying attention to Bryson and where he was.

I mean, you haven’t seen @kmcswain here in a while, have you?

“It wasn’t obvious Bryson was going to make par” in Rory’s mind translated to, “I better make sure I still have a chance to tie” instead of, “Hey this putt is to win the championship, let’s make sure we’re committed.”

This is textbook ‘doesn’t have that dog in him’ thinking.

Gonna start calling Rory “Little Pupper”

I mean - I think this is the correct thinking even though it didn’t work out for him. There was like a 2% chance Bryson wins outright once he put it in that bunker 60 yards short of the hole. Rory had a difficult putt and allowing Bryson to bogie and still win outright is about the worst thing Rory can do. Plus, Rory was hitting putts relatively defensively all week - why change that up on the last hole when it had evidently been working based on his tie for the lead at that point.

There is no way Rory wasn’t committed to making that putt with the speed he chose based on the situation. I think you are grossly oversimplifying a situation that had layers.

But it had just stopped working on 16 when he missed the 2’5" putt!

I dunno man. I’m reading this part of the quote to be a pretty obvious reading of, “I couldn’t make up my mind” aka wasn’t committed to which path he wanted to take on the putt.

I’ll back away from this conversation now though because it’s clear we’re going to see it differently and that’s okay.

No it isn’t. I want the discourse

I mean, a short downhill left to right slider for a right handed player might be the scariest putt in the game. It’s a putt that’s very easy to miss low, especially if you are concerned with running it well by.

counterpoint, if Rory made the putt no one would have ever mentioned it’s difficulty.
