2024 Refuge Roosts: Local Clubs & Club Championship Outline

I said it cause it is a funny thing to be paying a player who retired two decades ago…I think it was a good deal for Bonilla, but the Mets would probably rather not be paying him 1.19 million a year maybe get a bullpen arm instead… they deferred the cost to try to win a championship in the early 2000’s which didn’t happen so if we are Monday quarterbacking it was a poor decision

This explains it well.

Their 2021 payroll was nearly $250 million. You’re saying they couldn’t get a relief arm because 0.5% was going to Bobby Bonilla?

Also the value of the team has increased ~450% over the time since signing the contract. I think the Mets are doing ok even though they are paying Bobby more than they had to…

First, their 2021 payroll was $201 million. $9 million below the tax threshold, so if they wanted to get a reliever and stay under the tax threshold, going after a high-end reliever could have put them in a bind.

But the comment isn’t that Bonilla is stopping them from signing people it is the fact they are paying someone to literally not play at all. He brings no value to the team when that money could be spent bringing actual value.

The Mets are clearly doing ok, but from your initial point that the deal worked out for both sides. Bonilla made out like a bandit and the Mets every year are made into the leagues’ punching bag on July 1 every year.

I just disagree that this was a bad deal for the Mets. They got what they wanted and it’s not like Bonilla is adding value for another team.

The competing balance tax threshold is a yellow light. If you want to win you go through it (see username). The Angels on the other hand we’re paying Tio Albert to play for the better team up the I5 and that is some dumb shit.

That people laugh at the Mets is just ignorant. People don’t laugh at companies for paying retirees benefits. Those retirees don’t add value in the moment, but it was part of their deal. I think more players and teams should look at the Bonilla deal and consider structuring their deals as such, now maybe not as an 8% IRR as Bonilla got, but maybe 5-6% range.

I think it would be a tough scene if a company paid those benefits for 60 days of terrible work. He hit .160 for them in 1999, causing the buyout. A shame that the Mets only gave up reliever Mel Rojas for him. Would have been hilarious if they gave up something of value to acquire him, then bought him out for 30 years.

Exactly he isn’t adding any value anywhere but still receiving a check when the Mets could have saved millions by paying the normal structure.

Saying you have to go through the tax threshold is pretty ignorant-(lacking knowledge). Yes, congrats the Dodgers went through the tax threshold and won a WS in a shortened season but to assume you have to go through it to win is just wrong, by that standard last year the Dodgers were the only team in MLB wanting to win with a $275 million payroll, and the next closest was $205 million.

Just because they got what they wanted doesn’t make it a good deal. To use your example the Angels got what they wanted when they signed Pujols…most wouldn’t say that it’s a good deal. The Dodgers signed Trevor Bauer and got what they wanted… that doesn’t make it a good deal.

I was telling my partner about the Roosts and she said each one should give out a merit badge a la the boy/girl scouts if someone from a different Roost goes and plays with them and I thought the idea was hilarious :joy:

Back when I played club soccer at tournaments we would exchange patches/badges with the other team. It was a fun collection of past opponents and memories to sift through.
