Our Deep Dive series takes a slightly different form for this pod as Soly, Neil and D.J. go through a week by week recap of the 1994 PGA Tour season.
Just listened; incredible work fellas! Been a long time listener but this effort snagged me for a Nest membership! Can’t wait to dig in to this great community!
Also re: the Greater Milwaukee Open’s move to Brown Deer: on the Fedora Five of “stuffy Milwaukee country clubs”, Tuckaway wouldn’t even scratch the list. My club growing up, Bluemound CC, on the other hand… definitely Fedora-worthy (but in an awesome way).
Keep up the great work!
I have a 3 hour drive Thursday. Perfect timing.
More of these please the deep dives slap . Keep up the great work. I think a Payne Stewart deep dive would be received b . Perhaps another Trevino interview or Gary McCord they always have great stories
Ray Floyd was mentioned a number of times, is he getting his own spotlight or interview sometime? Guy seems like an all time menace and I don’t really know anything about him.
Spotlight would be nice, though I don’t think he does interviews. The only interview I’ve recalled Floyd doing in the last 20 years was the one with Feherty for his TV interview show. I think he bought some land up in Vermont and is happy living a quiet reclusive life. I do know his wife Maria passed away about 10 years ago.
But you’re right that Floyd was a character for sure.
Elk talks about him quite a bit in his episode. All time menace seems to be a great description of Mr Floyd.
Too many whippets!
I feel proud of the fact that I could pair almost every 1994 with its modern name/version. I was 13 years old that year and right in my formative years of watching and learning about the pro game.
I think in 1994 the bigger events were getting 2 hours of Thursday/Friday coverage on USA or ESPN, and 2-3 hours on the weekend on NBC/CBS/ABC (minus spillover from college basketball/baseball/football). BC Open didn’t get any TV coverage (imagine an entire PGATour event not getting any TV time!).
These deep dives make me feel old. I remember so many aspects of that 1994 season. A deep dive into ill-fated equipment contracts would be an all-timer!!!
- Payne Stewart disappeared from regular contention for a several years in the 90’s after signing a terrible equipment contract with Spalding. He had been with Wilson Staff since college.
- Corry Pavin signed with Cleveland to play the VAS irons after winning the 1995 US Open.
- Nick Price dominated professional golf up to 1994. He then signed a 10-year equipment deal with something called Atrigon Golf. He was never the same.
- Curtis Strange singed an equipment deal with a Swedish company called Maurman in 1994 and never recovered.
I was at the 1994 Canadian Open.
It was the year I was writing my exams to become a Chartered Accountant in Canada. The final exam (the Uniform Final Examination or UFE pronounced yoo-fee) was four four-hour papers, written over four consecutive mornings.
For some reason, in 1994, they made it on Fri, Mon-Wed, so I had a weekend to kill in the middle. I figured if I hadn’t learned it by that time, I wouldn’t know it so I went out Friday night, played golf Saturday, went out Saturday night, and went to the Canadian Open on Sunday.
I remember the crowd on 18 as Nick Price went up the fairway. I remember Joey Sindelar holing out a wedge for eagle on 16. And I remember Payne Stewart on the range (in his NFL plus fours) telling a boisterous and heavily f-bomb laden story to whoever was next to him.
Also, though no one has to believe me, I was able to name the Canadian Dunhill Cup team members of Stewart, Gibson, and Barr. It was a pretty big deal for Canadian golf.
Always enjoy the deep divers nice work all.
Was he wearing Bills colors?
I don’t remember to be certain. But given it was Sunday and Buffalo was the closest team, it would make sense.
Just want to let the @MerchCzar know that the Daily Gleaner is based in Fredericton, New Brunswick. Now the home of the ExploreNB Open on the PGA Tour America’s. Was certainly shocking to hear it on the pod!!
Per the biography written by Payne’s wife, Tracey, he could never get what he wanted out of the Spalding cavity backs. Payne Stewart: Bladetheist. MBeliever.
Also, regarding the Texas green at Cottonwood Valley:
Not a great likeness.
1994 was absolutely insane.
