1106: What Happened At Kapalua?

For the first time in many years, the PGA Tour season will not begin at Kapalua’s Plantation Course. But why? In this episode, D.J. and Charlie Van Kirk hear from several voices inside and outside of golf to investigate the drought and water shortage issues on Maui that have forced the cancellation of the 2026 Sentry, potentially putting the long-term future of the event in serious doubt.

Great work by Charlie. Clearly did his research and his pronunciations were on point. (Considering the bar was set by Neil pronouncing Rainer).

It’s a complicated situation to say the least. And the infighting between Kapalua and MLP.

Love hearing from Rolf.

Great job.

many thanks! There will be no instances of “Cap-uh-loo-ah” on my watch.

Not going to lie, I was a doubter when KVV left that this kind of content was going to take a hit. This episode absolutely delivered and I enjoyed the run down and deep dive thoroughly. Glad to have been proven wrong.

This podcast WHIPPED.

As already pointed out, @cvk was well researched and thorough in his reporting.

The particular care that was taken to get the Hawaiian pronunciations correct was both respectful and appreciated.

It’s not insignificant when someone takes the time to get those details right. It shows particular reverence for the topic being covered and the audience it’s been broadcast to.

2026 is off to a GOOD start with this type of content.

Well done boys.

Really enjoyed how you did your best to get all sides and let the listener make a decision on how they see it. Proper Big J stuff.

Andy had Rolf on the Fried Egg in the autumn and they had a good discussion about Kapalua but this pod gave us more perspectives and context which was great.

Great details about the history of the purse and how the Tour is topping it up to the tune of $5m a year.

They also had a Kahuku shoutout!

Also very much enjoyed this. Good to hear both sides of things and where golf sits in the wider context
