“Excuse me, but does KVV have a 23,403 comment thread dedicated to how douchey he is, like I do? Ya I think not.”

Can someone explain the Azinger v Seve 1991 Ryder Cup beef in a way someone who doesn’t really understand golf rules would understand.

From the podcast it sounds like Azinger and Beck had broken the rules by playing the wrong ball and didn’t own up to it until they were challenged by Seve? Isn’t that rather bad form or is it a no harm no foul type situation?

I don’t know a ton about Seve, just the incessant ryder cup suck fest every year. But after this pod I came away thinking, man Seve was an absolute fucking prick. Which probably is unfair? But yeah I don’t know enough to say, but the pod did make me feel that way.

@KVV

I think it was in a Rick Reilly book, but my favorite Seve story I’ve heard was – and I might get the complete details wrong here – he was playing a match against someone and both guys hit their tee shots…

they start down the fairway towards them, Seve’s opponent is walking ahead of him…

Seve’s opponent arrives first to a ball that ended up left, off the fairway in some kind of terrible lie, so he calls Seve over to ask for his opinion on the lie and the opportunity to take relief…

Seve quickly shuts him down, saying no! no! – you cannot take any relief, you have to play that as it is!

His opponent says, “Good. That’s your ball,” and walks off to his…

Hey you’re not allowed to criticize Seve unless you also slob all over him after the criticism.

Probably, but he was also usually right. He reminds me a lot of Ayrton Senna.

Gonna go out on a limb here and say nobody’s going to be doing impressions of any of the Asian players for the lols.

Seve being completely reasonable about the 17th hole at '99 Brookline was the biggest surprise in the entire pod.

If he was there, I’d imagine his comments would be different

Remember in 2012 when the classy Euros cliched a tie (retaining the cup) and celebrated by running all over the place and held up the final match for minutes?

Not that it would have changed whether Europe would retain the cup, but the US had an opportunity to save a little face and tie the match. Where was classy Olazabal then? Oh, telling Molinari to try to win the match so there was no tie. If the win was that important to Olazabal, why was it ok for his players to behave just as bad as the “terrible” Americans in 1999 by interrupting play and celebrating all over the green?

This is really great stuff.

Nevermind the 5 Majors and inspiring generations of European golfers. Seve’s proudest legacy has got to be that, almost 15 years after his death, he’s still living rent free in American heads :joy:
