1009: Ryder Cup Roundtable

Soly and TC are joined by Kyle Porter and Jamie Weir for a spring Ryder Cup roundtable. The Americans are still betting favorites, but should they be? We look at who’s trending on both sides, potential options for captains picks and take a look back at the Hat-Gate controversy in Rome.

Loved Jamie’s point about the US not being good at any team sports. Great stuff.

I was too annoyed to wait for the bot to start this thread…

I actually appreciated and respected how he explained later in the pod the big “J” journalistic process of getting the Cantlay hat story. It’s crazy that it was a story, but Normal Sport, right? His line about the US in team vs. individual sports really bothered me, as did the lack of pushback. It’s a common theme if you listen to the different Ryder Cup deep dives—Euro press can just say whatever they want and there’s no consequence or pushback. If anyone in the US does call them out, they’re the ugly American.

I get that it’s pearl clutching and it’s such small potatoes. But, people in media saying nonsense, untrue shit is kind of a problem in this country. Just hit a nerve I guess.

Hey look, Geno is on TGJ pod. Deuces!

Other than soccer, what other sport was he talking about?

Cricket

Didn’t we beat Pakistan against all odds in a historic upset?

Get out of here with your facts. Jamie hates those. You know, like how the US excels in tennis? American men fucking destroy.

Truly, who could say? I’ve never watched a USA cricket game in my life. Didn’t even know we attempted to form a team.

I only vaguely remember hearing about it. But we did beat them in the World Cup. Team USA beats Pakistan historic World Cup victory

An American male hasn’t won a major tennis title since Andy Roddick won the US Open in 2003… that was 22 years ago. College sophomores and juniors have never seen an American win a tennis title that matters.

Not global in reality. When you really dig into it there are not really many truly global team sports apart of soccer.

Saying the great US athletes all come from individual sports may be the worst take in any NLU content

Also it was a bold choice to have maybe the 3 best sentence interrupters in golf media all on the same show.

Don’t worry everyone, we’ll make Jamie eat his words with a flag football gold in LA

Its 18 years since USA has won the Davis Cup. USA has won 1 Fed Cup / Billie Jean King Cup since 2000.

That aside - Jamie was poking fun surely and not making a serious point there?

This would be like an American staying that soccer players are unathletic. Just an incredibly wrong take by Jamie. The US is pretty good at baseball, which is a world-wide team sport. Plus, our favorite sport, football, is one of the ultimate team sports. Maybe you could say that sports like baseball or basketball are more individualistic than a sport like soccer, but even that I would disagree with.

(And I would also point out that the US women are pretty fucking good at soccer.)

It annoyed me at the time, but then I also realized that this pod is just 4 people just saying outrageous shit to rile the others up.

Isn’t that his entire point? That they do well in individual sports?

He said that Americans excel in individual sports and cited tennis. My comment was meant as sarcasm—an American man hasn’t won a grand slam event in over 20 years and a very small handful of women outside Serena have had any meaningful success. His statement was lazy and inaccurate. That is not meant as sarcasm.

I think there’s an understanding between NLU and their audience that outrageous shit can be said and we the audience are in on a lot of it. It’s part of what I love about NLU. I feel like I’ve listened long enough that I have a reasonable understanding of when they’re breaking balls and when they are delivering serious news or opinions. When a guy is on roughly once a year, and is to be considered a Journalist of some relevance, I expect when they say something nonsensical that there’s going to be some follow-up. I’m guessing I’m not alone in that my only exposure to Jamie Weir is through NLU. So when he says something so inaccurate, it makes it hard to think he’s a serious person. Just a troll lobbing stale, lazy takes from the cheap seats.
