I know it’s not, it was previous stuff but I doubt having the app open helps it.
I think I will try a couple days this week to not have it open and just update at night or something.

love my saturday sunday recoveries been in the red since day one
Yo! Whoop is here. I’m hoping to get some help in the sleep department (chronic terrible sleeper). Got any tips? Places to start?
Use the journal in the app for sure. Log everything relevant. Screen time in bed, water and booze intake, etc. Over time it’ll start getting more specific on patterns tailored to you. Takes a few months.
Yep. Once you get for a few months logging everything as others say, then you out can experiment. Cold showers, yoga, cbd, etc. all stuff that you can try, and see if it effects you.
probably another sports agreement?
Oh wow, this is huge news: https://twitter.com/willahmed/status/1321417753518088193?s=21
I’ve been trying to get them to send me a complimentary bicep band because I was seeing the same things. Golf strain scores on the wrist band are incredibly inflated for me.
Whoop is gonna kick my ass. I’ve been using it as motivation to lose weight and get some level of fitness back.
Started back in July. Been going real well. Feeling great. Treadmill time paying off, but this week… I’ve been going for 3 mile runs, and still having some beers, and my recovery keeps going up.
That stupid strain coach is going to want like 14.5 today. Come on, man!
Honestly really glad this actually is helping me stay motivated. I don’t remember the last time I had 3 consecutive days of running at least 3 miles per run.
I have had this thing for a week now…my highest recovery is 71%, and it is my only time in the green range. I haven’t been drinking alcohol, 7 day sleep average is 98%. Avg strain is only 7.2 since most of my workout time has been weightlifting which doesn’t really give a high strain.
I have noticed that my HRV is really low versus what it should be for my age range. Not sure why…maybe I need to do more cardio or something.
Also still calibrating and getting to know you and your numbers, but cardio is some of HRV. What seems to have boosted my HRV and recovery this week is adding in calisthenics in addition to the cardio. Been feeling generally sore all week while hitting green recovery scores.
My best recovery was the day after my highest strain. I had 2 glasses of wine that night too which is the only alcohol I have had since getting the whoop.
Takes at least a few weeks before it is fully calibrated, basically once it establishes your baseline HRV, once you have days where your HRV comes in way above baseline, you’ll get high recovery scores. HRV is by far the biggest determinant of recovery, followed by RHR and then finally sleep. For instance my sleep score last night was only 80% and 84% the night before, my recovery though is 95% today and was 96% yesterday because my HRV was way above my normal and RHR way below.
Don’t fret too much about the day to day scores, focus on the trends and improving over time. Not sure how much you like to indulge, but if you’re like a lot of us on here, the first night you have a few too many it will be eye opening when you open up the app the following morning ha.
I just bought a Whoop strap (PGA members got a little deal on these recently), but then read the review at DC Rainmaker where he called it the worst HR monitor he’s seen, and points out that as the HR is the only real input, that’s problematic. He loves the app, but doesn’t like or trust the data, and doesn’t think that with the current design they can do much to improve it.
It’s from May of this year, so it’s not too old.
I have a day or two to cancel my order.
His complaint seems to be the accuracy of the optical heart rate sensor which is in general a flaw on many fitness devices. Since he is a fitness obsessed sicko, that seems reasonable.
The bigger benefit in my opinion is the simplicity of the data Whoop provides. And I think over time the inaccuracies aren’t really that much of a deviation with a longer view at it.
Cancel away though if you want obviously. Different strokes for different folks.
I just wish Apple would build a better interface for viewing the data I’m already capturing with my Apple Watch.
I don’t know that I’d say it’s a “flaw on many fitness devices.” He says:
And ultimately, at the end of the day, I’ll save you more rambling: It’s the least accurate heart rate sensor I’ve tested in a long while – rivaling only the Suunto 7’s less than stellar optical HR accuracy.
And in a device that is 100% based on the accuracy of that sensor, it’s a huge problem.
It’s the least accurate one he’s tested in a long while. So if it’s a flaw in other systems, this is among the worst.
I’m still willing to try it at this point, because while that guy is a triathlete, I am not. So maybe the HR monitor stuff, despite being “the only input” as he calls it, doesn’t matter that much.
What’s the price point of other 24/7 wearable HR monitors with sleep tracking?
I haven’t dug deep into 24/7 wearables. Is he only comparing 24/7 ones? Saw him compare to chest straps but those *generally aren’t 24/7.
Interesting thing I plan to dig into.
Edit: I recall another review that said it has 4 total measurements it takes. 3 optical based and 1 movement based. Can’t remember if that’s accurate but I did find it interesting he didn’t dive deep into hardware and mostly used his anecdotal experience as a triathlete deep in using wearables.
As others said. DC is nuts when it comes to wearables and his job is kinda to rip them apart.
But I can say I wear a Apple Watch on one wrist and my whoop on the other and the Heart rate data is similar. I’ve even pulled some of the HRV data out and compared and it was close enough.
At the end of the day; if you’re a professional athlete using the recovery data to setup races and push on training days, ya it may not be 100% accurate.
But if I’m using it to generally get in shape and laugh at my recovery when I drink 4 beers, works great lol
