Yeah. I liked St. Andrews Sojourn (the version I had), but it’s much more about the Town and the golf culture there than about the golf itself.
As long as it stops being about his entitled privilege and is more about how awesome St. Andrews itself is, I’ll keep reading.
I’ve read both A Season in Dornoch and Two Years in St. Andrews in the past year. Deeply enjoyed both, but I was looking for a reason to enjoy them and not a reason to criticize them. Those guys live lives that are blessed in some ways, but I’m sure they aren’t writing about their worst experiences so my recommendation is not to compare their lives to yours.
I just finished “To Sleep in a Sea of Stars”. Very interesting, not the greatest book ever but I’m glad I read it.
I’m starting “Loopers” by John Dunn now. Also working on listening to “The End of Everything (Astrophysically Speaking)” by Katie Mack.
Loved Loopers. I was fairly close to reaching out to Tara-Iti about their caddie setup after reading it.
Yup!!! I’m at a horse race within the first 20 pages.
Just finished Station 11 after hearing some folks here mention it. I liked it a lot, maybe not as much as some others, but definitely worth picking up.
If people are interested in diving into book club, now’s a good time!
I just finished “How Lucky,” a novel by Will Leitch (yes, the former Deadspin guy).
I thought it was quite good. It was a nice mix of being a breezy read, but also a good reminder of how good I have things.
I love Will Leitch. He has a weekly newsletter that I love and was a nice solace during the last year. He gave away a few copies of this book to readers and I won one, supposedly randomly but possibly also because I told him his taste in Girl Scout Cookies was horrific (who ranks Samoa’s last? Psychopaths, that’s who.). I wrote a fair review (I really liked it, didn’t love it) and he wrote me the nicest email thanking me for it. Such a mensch.
I have known Will for a million years, but at arm’s length. I covered Illinois during my first newspaper job and he was a Daily Illini kid. We know each other enough to be FB friends or have a brief conversations, but we aren’t friends-friends.
I thought the book was good. So rarely do you have a main character who isn’t able bodied. And the writing was good.
He ranked Samoas last? Only if you’re doing it it Letterman style and going worst to best.
Finished “Loopers”. Very enjoyable. I’ve read a lot of these “golf life”, “golf travel”, etc. type of books lately and this was one of the better-written, more interesting ones.
And I also just finished listening to “The End of Everything (Astrophysically Speaking)” by Katie Mack. Very well done, understandable, not too deep. Thumbs up.
Well the title alone has my attention.
Anybody read The Extraordinary Life of Sam Hell? It’s up next on my audible list, although I have other options.
Don’t skip past Sam Hell. Been a while but it was a great read — think you will enjoy it a lot.
As I assume most of us have, I finished ACCA a few weeks ago . Thoroughly enjoyed the read, and picked up A Course Called Ireland to start from the “beginning.”
I’ve finally started working on “Five Families” by Selwynn Raab, bought it 8-10 months ago before a work trip and never ended up reading it. I’m only 50-60 pages in but I’m hooked on the history and intricacies of how the Mafia came to be.
It’s very good. I’m actually reading a book right now I got from the Little Free Library down MY street - The City We Became by N.K. Jesmin.
Very good book
The City We Became might be the best book I read this year. Very good time/place when I read it, but I loved it.
