How did the trip go? I am headed to Glade Springs in September this year. Playing all three courses (Cobb, Stonehaven, Woodhaven). We want to pick one to play a 2nd time. Which one is the most fun or best for matches in your opinion? My group is a mix of HDCPs from ~8-20.
Really late here, but what did you think of Glade? I think the first time I ever broke 80 was at the Cobb Course.
Glade was an amazing value - for stay and play. Stonehaven was local to the cottages, and had a BYOB policy, which my group really enjoyed. We played 27 at Stonehaven one day and were able to drive back to the cottages to restock our coolers. Also Stonehaven was not busy - they let us play a 9 hole 8some late in the day in early September, where we had a 4v4 scramble match. It was super fun. Woodhaven was one of the toughest tracks I’ve played in a long time, but had severe burnout on some fairways. The greens were mostly in good shape at both courses. The Cobb course had slick greens, and was more traditional, flat with tree lined fairways.
Overall, I’d recommend it. The golf is fun and challenging, although there are courses with better conditions, the price was great for what you get. And if you stay in the cottages, there is enough good food options onsite, so you can walk everywhere.
Playing old white in September, I think it forces the group to get a forecaddie.
Likely going to be playing as a single, should I walk it with a caddie?
I’ve played up there 10 times or so and never was forced to take a forecaddie.
Its not a bad walk at all for a mountain course, but IMO riding with the gps carts is fine too. Sept should be prime walking weather, if bringing my push cart was ever an option I would have done that.
From the Website: “From May 1 to October 31, forecaddies will be assigned to all groups on The Old White course at no extra charge. Additionally, you can request walking caddies or forecaddies for other courses as needed.”
At a minimum you will have a forecaddie in your group, unless you or someone else in the group decides to get an individual caddie. I have played Old White twice, both times with a forecaddie and both times taking a cart. I think if I were to go back and play it again by myself I would likely walk with a caddie. If I recall correctly, it isn’t a difficult walk.
Also, looking at the website I believe they are scheduled to aerate The Old White September 2-3. Not sure when you are planning on playing, but you can get a discounted rate if you buy a WVGA membership/VIP card. I think the card is $25 - $30 and gets you discounts at several courses in the state, including The Old White @ Greenbrier. Only caveat is you have to play the course after 1:00 PM. Below is link to the WVGA VIP card site.
