Season 5: Sid gets her star.
Finished my full S1-3 rewatch plus S4 this weekend.
1-2 are still the highpoints. Nothing is topping that. I actually rather enjoyed S3 on rewatch. Thought it really grew on me and I defnitely had some bad takes about it at the time. A few things are still true but overall the pace of it didn’t bother me this time.
And S4 is good. The fight between Claire and Carmy is fantastic. Personally way more out on Sydney’s arc than Carmy’s. Her will she / won’t she leave thing has been my least favorite storyline. Especially when there were multiple misdirections on which choice she was going to make. I have zero interest when she’s entirely unwilling to open a fucking email and read a damn contract that would have answered many of her concerns months ago.
Thought ‘Goodbye’ was great. A lot of of very realistic emotion to me - Syd/Richie finding Carmy’s decision to be selfish when he fully believes what he’s doing is best for everyone else. I tend to lean on his/Nat’s side. She’s the only one who is willing to let him go because she can see that doing it is whats killing him.
Excited for a S5. Hope they can get everyone together for it and close out the story.
I’m 8 eps through s4 after just watching s3 as well. I appreciated some of the artistic swings they took, but they kinda felt like fly outs rather than hits. Tina’s ep in s3 was definitely the highlight.
Totally agree on Syd’s arc—it has dragged out over 2 seasons and then the stuff with her dad feels shoehorned. I think her character is underdeveloped—you get a bunch of vignettes that don’t really add up to a cohesive whole.
I think my other complaint about the show is how quickly they will contract and expand the timeline where a couple episodes will be over like 36 hours and then we’ll have one where months pass. That ties back into syd—how long was she just straight up ignoring her dad? Weeks? Months? Not sure.
Wedding episode made me teary. Great stuff there
Glad to see some others had the same thoughts about Sydney’s arc. Thank God there was finally some resolution there because I couldn’t take another episode of her hemming and hawing.
Isnt hemming and hawing the point of the whole show?
I think this is really important, and I think for me its less of a complaint but helps me feel more okay about the shows pacing somehow? Like I just have to contextualize their timeline and then I realize how little has actually passed, or at least how little of the time that has passed they have shown.
Like S3 is 3 months. First episode doesn’t count. Second episode is 1-2 days after end of S2. Then ‘Doors’ is basically like a 3 month long montage. Episode 5 they learn Ever is closing the next week so eps 5-10 cover about 10 days time.
Then same thing for S4 - the whole thing is they have 2 months. Episodes 8-10 all cover 1 day. Wedding is 1 day. Like the whole season is a vinette into 5-6 days out of a 2 month period.
Just finished S4. Prob my least fav season. It lost its pacing. Scenes which, in prior seasons, would be snappy are now turgid. Half the wedding episode was a Ritchie and Frank love in. It could have been so hectic, so boisterous, so chaotic as was hinted at by Stevie. I couldn’t care less about Carmy’s self-centred, pick me, angst. Syd and the crew, are better off without him. Imagine if he had walked at the beginning of the season and they had to crack on without him. It would have been loads better. I found myself skipping dialogue. Some of it felt so forced. There were some highlights in the dross: Bob Odenkirk’s scene stealing cameo and Jamie Lee Curtis’s scene - just coming off the top rope compared to Jeremy Allen White deer in headlights “acting”.
Give Jaime Lee Curtis every Emmy you can. A true Generational Talent™
Don’t think it’s much of a surprise. Storrer said from the start he wanted it to be 5 seasons, but could possibly make it 3. With the 3 main cast members having so much other work now, I’d have been shocked if they stuck around any longer
Yeah not surprising given they could have wrapped it last season. Hoping they close it out well
I gotta be honest…I wrote a whole ass post on last season and I can’t even remember what happened. I think I’m retrospect season 1 might’ve been flash in the pan good. Will still watch the last season
